Adaptation of Some Quinoa Genotypes (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), Grown in a Saharan Climate in Algeria

Kelthoum Maamri et al.

Summary: Agriculture in southern Algeria faces challenges from drought, high temperatures, and excessive soil and groundwater salinity. This study evaluated the performance of different varieties of quinoa in the Ouargla region. The results showed that higher grain yields were obtained at high salinity sites, but plant height, grain yield per plant, and harvest index varied between varieties and sites. Adaptation of the cropping cycle to new environments is crucial for successful quinoa cultivation.

Nano and submicron fluorescent polystyrene particles internalization and translocation in seedlings of Cichorium endivia L.

Simonetta Muccifora et al.

Summary: Contamination by plastics is a major cause of terrestrial pollution. This study investigated the effects of nano and submicron-sized polystyrene particles on chicory plants. The results showed that particle size and concentration had an impact on germination and seedling development, but had a positive effect on photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant activity. Additionally, smaller particles were found to be more easily internalized and transported within plant tissues.

Early responses to salt stress in quinoa genotypes with opposite behavior

Federico Vita et al.

Summary: Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress affecting plants, especially in arid and semiarid regions. Quinoa, a halophytic pseudo-cereal, shows high salt tolerance and can secrete salt out of young leaves through epidermal bladder cells. Transcript profiling of two quinoa genotypes revealed constitutive differences in gene expression related to salt tolerance traits, providing insights into molecular mechanisms at the early stages of salinity stress. These findings may contribute to the development of plant breeding or genome engineering programs in quinoa.

Assessment of early physiological and biochemical responses in chia (Salvia hispanica L.) sprouts under salt stress

Mahmoud E. Younis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the early physiological and biochemical impacts of different concentrations of NaCl on chia sprouts after germination in stressful conditions for 7 days. The results showed that most germination parameters declined linearly with increasing NaCl concentrations, while stress tolerance attributes, total carbohydrate content, proline, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant levels increased. Chia sprouts were found to be sensitive to salt stress concentrations above 10 mM NaCl.

Free and Conjugated Phenolic Profiles and Antioxidant Activity in Quinoa Seeds and Their Relationship with Genotype and Environment

Fabiana Antognoni et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the profile of bioactive compounds in seeds of two quinoa varieties grown in northern Italy with those grown in Chile and Denmark. The results showed that although there were some differences in polyphenolic profile and biological activities, good-quality quinoa can still be grown in northern Italy.
