Curcumin improves insulin sensitivity in high-fat diet-fed mice through gut microbiota

Yue Zhong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of gut microbiota in mediating the effects of curcumin on improving insulin sensitivity in high-fat diet-fed mice. The results showed that curcumin improved glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, pyruvate intolerance, and hepatic triglycerides accumulation in high-fat diet-fed mice, and these effects were mediated by gut microbiota. Curcumin increased insulin-stimulated Akt phosphorylation levels and inhibited the expression of genes involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis and de novo lipogenesis, which depended on gut microbiota. Additionally, curcumin upregulated the expression of fibroblast growth factor 15 (FGF15) through gut microbiota. This study provided new insights into the nutritional manipulations of gut microbiota for the treatment of metabolic diseases.

Combined Supplementation with Vitamin B-6 and Curcumin is Superior to Either Agent Alone in Suppressing Obesity-Promoted Colorectal Tumorigenesis in Mice

Xian Wu et al.

Summary: The combination of curcumin and vitamin B-6 is more effective in preventing obesity-promoted colorectal carcinogenesis compared to either agent alone. The combination reduces colonic inflammation and tumor multiplicity, and works by suppressing pro-cancer signaling pathways.

The p38MAPK-MK2 Signaling Axis as a Critical Link Between Inflammation and Synaptic Transmission

Edward Beamer et al.

Summary: MK2, a downstream target of p38(MAPK), regulates gene expression and synaptic plasticity indirectly through control of RNA-binding proteins and cytoskeletal dynamics. While its role in inflammation and cellular stress is well-described, the involvement of neuronal MK2 in mediating synaptic plasticity in response to inflammation remains unclear.

Long non-coding RNA Meg3 deficiency impairs glucose homeostasis and insulin signaling by inducing cellular senescence of hepatic endothelium in obesity

Xiao Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found that the lncRNA Meg3 plays a role in obesity-induced insulin resistance by inducing cellular senescence of endothelial cells. Knockdown of Meg3 exacerbates the disease progression by promoting cellular senescence in hepatic endothelium.

Mechanisms of Cellular Senescence: Cell Cycle Arrest and Senescence Associated Secretory Phenotype

Ruchi Kumari et al.

Summary: Cellular senescence is a stable cell cycle arrest triggered in response to various stimuli, characterized by dynamic changes in senescent cells. It has both positive effects on tissue repair and anti-cancer mechanisms, but can also negatively impact organismal health. Multiple pathways, including p53/p21 and p16/pRB, play central roles in regulating this process.

Aging triggers an upregulation of a multitude of cytokines in the male and especially the female rodent hippocampus but more discrete changes in other brain regions

Latarsha Porcher et al.

Summary: Despite the wide acceptance of neuroinflammation contributing to age-related cognitive decline, studies on cytokine protein expression in young versus old brains are limited. Age-related increases in cytokines are more pronounced in the hippocampus, especially in females, with a shift in glycosylated forms of IL-10 and IL-1 beta in this brain region. Age-related increases in IL-6 expression are also seen in extra-hippocampal regions but are more discreet.
