Studying and Analyzing Humane Endpoints in the Fructose-Fed and Streptozotocin-Injected Rat Model of Diabetes

Rita Silva-Reis et al.

Summary: This study assessed a humane endpoint scoring system to detect animal suffering in a rat model of type 2 diabetes. Results showed that weight loss, polyuria, polyphagia, abnormal posture, abdominal distension, and abnormal stool appearance were the most effective parameters to evaluate humane endpoints in this rat model. This study is important for defining humane endpoints in a rat model of type 2 diabetes.

Long-Term Aerobic Training Improves Mitochondrial and Antioxidant Function in the Liver of Wistar Rats Preventing Hepatic Age-Related Function Decline

Monica Garcia Silva et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the lifelong benefits of aerobic exercise in preventing age-related consequences on liver function and antioxidant activity. The duration of the training protocol might be more critical for the adaptive response than exercise intensity. Regular aerobic exercise can prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and loss of antioxidant system efficacy in the liver associated with aging.

Bread enriched with resveratrol: Influence of the delivery vehicles on its bioactivity

Andreia F. R. Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of two delivery systems on the stability, antioxidant activity, bio-accessibility, and bioavailability of trans-resveratrol integrated into a bread matrix. The results showed that bread itself can effectively deliver trans-resveratrol without the need for additional delivery systems.

Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Diabetic Cardiomyopathy: A Target for Intervention

Mohapradeep Mohan et al.

Summary: Left ventricular hypertrophy is common in patients with type 2 diabetes and is a strong predictor of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including heart failure. While antihypertensive treatment can reduce LVH and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, it is not completely effective. Other potential mechanisms such as inflammation, oxidative stress, AMP-activated kinase, and insulin resistance may also play a role in the development of LVH.

Summary: The study found that both DOX and MTX treatment led to decreased mitochondrial density in young adult mice, while aged control group showed increased expression of PGC1 alpha and MnSOD. Additionally, DOX and MTX downregulated proteins associated with oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation, amino acid metabolic process, and tricarboxylic acid cycle.
