Functional characterization of monothiol and dithiol glutaredoxins from Leptospira interrogans

Natalia Sasoni et al.

Summary: This study reports the identification of two new redox factors, Lin1CGrx and Lin2CGrx, linked to GSH metabolism and iron homeostasis in L. interrogans. The biochemical characterization, kinetic and structural analysis of these proteins revealed their functions and structural features.

The effect of natural infection with different Leptospira interrogans serovars on oxidative stress biomarkers and acute-phase responses in horses and cattle

Ehsan Niroomandi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the oxidant/antioxidant balance and acute-phase response in naturally infected horses and cattle with Leptospira interrogans. The results showed that horses and cattle infected with L. interrogans had extensive changes in oxidant/antioxidant equilibrium and acute-phase protein concentrations. Furthermore, a direct link between antibody titers and the type of leptospiral serovar was demonstrated using serum oxidative and inflammatory markers.

Bacterial Response to Oxidative Stress and RNA Oxidation

Andre F. Seixas et al.

Summary: Bacteria face oxidative stress caused by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), and have developed strategies to protect cells and combat RNA oxidation. RNA oxidation can lead to structural and functional damage, resulting in harmful consequences for cell survival. However, bacteria have evolved RNA quality control pathways to eliminate oxidized RNA.

How Microbes Evolved to Tolerate Oxygen

Maryam Khademian et al.

Summary: Ancient microbes developed biochemical mechanisms and core metabolic pathways on an anoxic Earth, but had to evolve defensive tactics to combat the damaging effects of oxygen and reactive oxygen species (ROS) later on. Recent studies have identified enzymes targeted by ROS and revealed various protective strategies to enhance scavenging systems, shedding light on a more comprehensive and surprising understanding of oxygen toxicity.

The FUR-like regulators PerRA and PerRB integrate a complex regulatory network that promotes mammalian host-adaptation and virulence of Leptospira interrogans

Andre A. Grassmann et al.

Summary: Leptospira interrogans, the causative agent of most cases of human leptospirosis, responds to various environmental signals during its different lifestyles. Genes encoding the Peroxide responsive regulators PerRA and PerRB are found to be crucial for infectivity and renal colonization. Comparative transcriptomics identified multiple dysregulated genes related to environmental sensing and transcriptional regulation in the PerRA and PerRB regulons. These regulators form a complex network promoting host adaptation in mammals.

Regulation of tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide Resistance by Chromosomal OhrR in A. baumannii ATCC 19606

Shih-Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This study showed that Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606 harbors two sets of ohrR-ohr genes in chromosomal DNA and a pMAC plasmid. While the chromosomal ohrR-C-ohr-C genes act as the major system in protecting the bacteria from organic hydroperoxide stresses, the pMAC ohrR-p-ohr-p genes can provide a supplementary protective effect and their interaction may influence bacterial growth and virulence.
