Alternatives to antibiotics for organic poultry production: types, modes of action and impacts on bird's health and production

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: The poultry industry plays a significant role in addressing the nutritional gap in many countries by providing protein-rich meat and eggs at a lower cost than other animal meat sources. Following the ban of antibiotic growth promoters, natural alternatives such as probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, essential oils, and other feed additives have gained popularity in the poultry industry for their unique properties and positive impact on poultry production. They can easily be mixed with other feed ingredients, improve feed intake and conversion rate, enhance bird immunity and digestion, reduce antibiotic usage, and provide healthy organic products for human consumption.

Ginsenoside Rg3 reduces the adhesion, invasion, and intracellular survival of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium

Abraham F. Mechesso et al.

Summary: The study found that ginsenoside Rg3 can significantly reduce the adhesion, invasion, and intracellular survival of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, as well as inhibit bacterial motility and nitrite release from infected macrophages. Treatment with Rg3 also affected gene expression related to adhesion, invasion, quorum sensing, and virulence of S. Typhimurium.

Organic cranberry pomace and its ethanolic extractives as feed supplement in broiler: impacts on serum Ig titers, liver and bursal immunity

Quail Das et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of cranberry fruit by-products in enhancing immunity in broiler chickens. Results showed that supplementation of cranberry products modulated innate immune response and suppressed proinflammatory cytokines in broilers, providing a platform for future research on berry products in poultry feeding.

Protective Effects of Cinnamaldehyde on the Inflammatory Response, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptosis in Liver of Salmonella typhimurium-Challenged Mice

Renjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that cinnamaldehyde alleviates Salmonella typhimurium-induced liver injury in mice by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. The beneficial effects of cinnamaldehyde may provide a preventive strategy for liver injury caused by Salmonella typhimurium infection in both humans and animals.

Effect of cranberry juice deacidification on its antibacterial activity against periodontal pathogens and its anti-inflammatory properties in an oral epithelial cell model

Genevieve Pellerin et al.

Summary: The study found that removal of organic acids from cranberry juice through electrodialysis weakened its antibacterial effect against certain periodontal pathogens, but had varying effects on the adherence of these pathogens to oral epithelial cells. Additionally, deacidification of cranberry juice reduced its cytotoxicity for oral epithelial cells and attenuated its anti-inflammatory effect.
