Salicylic acid alleviates oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation caused by clopyralid herbicide in Indian mustard plants

Bahman Ghahremani et al.

Summary: This study conducted two separate farm experiments to investigate the effects of seed priming or foliar spraying with salicylic acid on Indian mustard plants under drought and well-watered conditions. The results showed that a high dose of clopyralid had adverse physiological and biochemical effects on the plants, but the effects were less severe under drought conditions. Application of salicylic acid, especially seed priming, reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and increased leaf chlorophyll, carotenoid, and water content. These findings suggest that salicylic acid has a beneficial impact on detoxifying clopyralid.

Heavy metal and metalloid toxicity in horticultural plants: Tolerance mechanism and remediation strategies

Iqra Noor et al.

Summary: Heavy metals and metalloids are major soil pollutants that limit crop production worldwide. The exposure to these pollutants induces oxidative stress in plants and alters their biochemical and morphological characteristics. Plants have evolved complex physiological and cellular defense strategies to cope with heavy metal toxicity, such as sequestration and transportation of metals, activation of signaling pathways, and detoxification mechanisms. Understanding the toxicity, signaling pathways, and tolerance mechanisms of heavy metals will help in developing new crop varieties and improving phytoremediation.

Summary: This study revealed that an HD-Zip I transcription factor (MsHB7) in alfalfa plays a crucial negative regulatory role in response to salt stress. MsHB7 enhances the salt sensitivity in alfalfa by suppressing the expressions of ABA-responsive and antioxidant enzyme coding genes. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the gene regulation mechanism in alfalfa and provide important strategies for breeding salt-tolerant varieties.

Proline metabolism as regulatory hub

Maria E. Alvarez et al.

Summary: Proline is a multifunctional amino acid that accumulates in plants under various stress conditions, playing a role in regulating osmotic pressure, energy status, nutrient availability, redox balance, and defense against pathogens. Its biosynthesis and catabolism are linked to photosynthesis and mitochondrial respiration, and it can also function as a signal regulating gene expression and metabolic processes. This amino acid plays an important role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, regulating plant development, and promoting stress acclimation.
