Dephosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase exacerbates ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury via mitochondrial dysfunction

Haijian Ma et al.

Summary: This study reveals that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays an important protective role in tubular epithelial cells during acute kidney injury. The deficiency of AMPK leads to lipid droplet accumulation and elevated levels of ceramides and free fatty acids in the kidney tubules, resulting in worsened kidney impairment.

Lingonberry Improves Hepatic Lipid Metabolism by Targeting Notch1 Signaling

Susara Madduma Hewage et al.

Summary: Impaired hepatic lipid metabolism is a characteristic feature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and there are currently no effective treatment options. Recent studies have shown that Notch signaling is important for hepatic lipid metabolism. Lingonberry, a fruit rich in anthocyanins, has been found to have significant lipid-lowering properties. This study investigated the effects of lingonberry on Notch signaling and fatty acid metabolism in a mouse model of NAFLD. The results showed that lingonberry supplementation inhibited Notch1 signaling and improved lipid profile in the liver by affecting the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism.

Critical Overview of Hepatic Factors That Link Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Acute Kidney Injury: Physiology and Therapeutic Implications

Le Chen et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) are important public health diseases with a heavy burden on healthcare systems worldwide. NAFLD may lead to AKI through the effects of hepatic factors, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Hepatic factors play a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism and maintaining energy homeostasis, and may serve as a potential therapeutic target for preventing the progression of metabolic diseases.

Role of AMPK in Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury-Induced Cell Death in the Presence and Absence of Diabetes

Nirupama Kandula et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that cell death is a key feature of cardiac diseases such as myocardial infarction and diabetes. The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signalling pathway plays a crucial role in regulating different types of cell death, including autophagy, apoptosis, necroptosis, and ferroptosis. Down-regulation of AMPK has been observed in cardiac tissues of animals and humans with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and stimulating AMPK activity has shown promise in improving diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications.

AMP-activated protein kinase: A remarkable contributor to preserve a healthy heart against ROS injury

Alice Marino et al.

Summary: Heart failure is a major cause of death and disability globally, with left ventricular remodeling, fibrosis, and ischemia/reperfusion injury contributing to cardiac dysfunction. AMPK acts as a universal energy sensor in response to low ATP levels, playing a crucial role in the heart. Excessive reactive oxygen species can activate AMPK, providing an additional role as a redox sensor for preventing heart failure progression.

Acute kidney injury and its progression in hospitalized patients-Results from a retrospective multicentre cohort study with a digital decision support system

Thea Sophie Kister et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential benefits of a clinical decision support system (CDSS) for the automated detection of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) were evaluated. It was found that AKI was associated with higher hospital mortality and increased length of hospitalization. 19.1% of AKI cases progressed to higher AKI stages during hospitalization, showing significantly longer hospitalization and increased mortality rates.

Acute Kidney Injury and Organ Dysfunction: What Is the Role of Uremic Toxins?

Jesus Ivan Lara-Prado et al.

Summary: The mechanisms behind multi-organ dysfunction in acute kidney injury (AKI) are not fully understood, with oxidative stress and uremic toxin accumulation being major contributors. Discrepancies between animal models and human presentations exist, and inflammatory cytokines play a role in endothelial and epithelial injury.
