Differential phosphorylation of Clr4SUV39H by Cdk1 accompanies a histone H3 methylation switch that is essential for gametogenesis

Tahsin Kuzdere et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that H3K9 methylation undergoes changes during mitosis in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and the lack of trimethylation of H3K9 leads to defects in chromosome segregation during mitosis. Additionally, the switch in H3K9 methylation is accompanied by phosphorylation of Clr4.

Summary: Research has shown that ubiquitination of lysine 14 on histone H3 (H3K14ub) plays a key role in H3K9 methylation in the fission yeast. The SET domain of Clr4 harbors a conserved sensor for H3K14ub, which mediates licensing of heterochromatin formation.
