Basin scale distributions of dissolved manganese, nickel, zinc and cadmium in the Mediterranean Sea

Rob Middag et al.

Summary: The study found that the dissolved metal concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea are influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in increased surface concentrations. Atmospheric deposition is also identified as an important source of these metals. Regular basin wide assessments of trace metal distributions in the Mediterranean are needed to confirm or detect trends in dissolved metal concentrations in the deep basin.

Morphological, Gene, and Hormonal Changes in Gonads and In-Creased Micrococcal Nuclease Accessibility of Sperm Chromatin Induced by Mercury

Gennaro Lettieri et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of exposure to different concentrations of mercury chloride on the reproductive health of Mytilus galloprovincialis were analyzed. The results showed that mercury exposure led to alterations in gonadal morphology, hypo-expression of stress genes, decreased expression of steroidogenic enzymes and PL protein genes, and abnormal sperm chromatin structure.

Claudia Moriello et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of Cr(VI) exposure on the reproductive health of Mytilus galloprovincialis was evaluated. It was found that exposure to 1 nM Cr(VI) resulted in reduced binding and protective abilities of Protamine-like proteins and alterations in gene expression.

A novel human biomonitoring study by semiconductor gas sensors in Exposomics: investigation of health risk in contaminated sites

Valentina Longo et al.

Summary: This study conducted human biomonitoring research on healthy young male population in two contaminated areas in central-southern Italy using a semiconductor gas sensor array trained by SPME-GC/MS. The analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) fingerprinting allowed discrimination of the different contaminations in the two areas and prediction of chemical concentration of identified VOCs by GC/MS.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

Luigi Montano et al.

Summary: In the last decade, there has been renewed attention in the scientific community on the presence and potential risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to their continued presence in the environment and workplaces. PCBs primarily enter the human body through ingestion of contaminated foods, followed by inhalation and dermal contact. These pollutants are found in building materials and electrical equipment, with the highest contamination levels in e-waste recycling sites. Studies have reported environmental and occupational exposure to PCBs, with workers showing increased blood PCB concentrations. Epidemiological studies suggest that high concentrations of PCBs are associated with various health outcomes including neuropsychological deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. PCBs bioaccumulation also affects fertility and reproductive systems. Further research is needed to understand the effects of low-level PCBs exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Aluminium exposure leads to neurodegeneration and alters the expression of marker genes involved to parkinsonism in zebrafish brain

Teresa Capriello et al.

Summary: Aluminium is a non-essential metal to human metabolism, but it is considered an etiological factor in neurodegenerative diseases. Research using zebrafish as an animal model suggests that aluminium can affect the morphology of brain tissue and contribute to the dysregulation of genes related to Parkinson's disease.

Research progress on the effects of nickel on hormone secretion in the endocrine axis and on target organs

Jingjing Yang et al.

Summary: Nickel, an abundant element in the earth's crust, has a significant impact on the endocrine system by affecting hormone secretion and target organs. Excess nickel can lead to dysregulation of endocrine hormones, impacting human growth, mental development, and reproductive ability. Further research is needed due to contradictory data and limited studies on the endocrine system.

New Insights into Alterations in PL Proteins Affecting Their Binding to DNA after Exposure of Mytilus galloprovincialis to Mercury-A Possible Risk to Sperm Chromatin Structure?

Gennaro Lettieri et al.

Summary: The exposure of Mytilus galloprovincialis to doses of HgCl2 induced alterations in protamine-like protein properties, affecting their ability to bind and protect DNA. Turbidity assays and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed mercury-induced structural rearrangements and conformational changes, while salt-induced release analyses showed decreased PL-DNA binding. These findings provide insight into the molecular mechanism of mercury-related infertility in mussels.

Summary: The study found that mussels from the Mediterranean and Atlantic were resilient to acidification in most parameters, but shell strength consistently decreased by 40% in moderately and highly acidified seawater. The impact of climate change on eco-physiology and behavior of mussels is complex, and the feasibility of cultivating the species in the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions is discussed.
