Role of Mitochondrial Transporters on Metabolic Rewiring of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: A Comprehensive Review

Graziantonio Lauria et al.

Summary: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) extensively rewires its metabolism to utilize glucose and glutamine for nucleotide and protein synthesis, lipid synthesis, and redox homeostasis. Several mitochondrial transporters play a crucial role in this metabolic rewiring, and targeting them may be a potential strategy for combating PDAC.

A Picrocrocin-Enriched Fraction from a Saffron Extract Affects Lipid Homeostasis in HepG2 Cells through a Non-Statin-like Mode

Luca Frattaruolo et al.

Summary: Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder associated with lipid imbalance, leading to conditions such as atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Statins are the main pharmacological therapy, but their limitations have prompted the search for new strategies. This study investigated the hypolipidemic effects of a picrocrocin-enriched fraction derived from saffron extract in HepG2 cells. The results suggest that this compound possesses interesting hypolipidemic effects through a non-statin-like mechanism, highlighting the biological potential of saffron as a useful adjuvant in balancing blood lipid homeostasis.

Glutamine-Derived Aspartate Biosynthesis in Cancer Cells: Role of Mitochondrial Transporters and New Therapeutic Perspectives

Ruggiero Gorgoglione et al.

Summary: In recent years, the role of aspartate in cancer cell metabolism has been increasingly recognized. Aspartate plays a crucial role in nucleotide and protein synthesis as well as redox homeostasis. Mitochondrial transporters are involved in the metabolism of aspartate and their involvement is cancer type-specific and dependent on the availability of glutamine. Targeting these transporters may be a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

The mitochondrial aspartate/glutamate carrier (AGC or Aralar1) isoforms in D. melanogaster: biochemical characterization, gene structure, and evolutionary analysis

Paola Lunetti et al.

Summary: The study identified six isoforms of the aralar1 gene in Drosophila melanogaster, with variations in expression during development or in different tissues. Recombinant Aralar1-PA and Aralar1-PE proteins showed similar efficiency in exchanging glutamate and aspartate, and exhibited substrate affinities comparable to human isoforms.

An Overview of Mitochondrial Protein Defects in Neuromuscular Diseases

Federica Marra et al.

Summary: Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) involve skeletal muscle dysfunction due to genetic mutations, leading to muscle weakness and fatigue. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a key role in the development of NMDs, with alterations in genes and pathways related to mitochondrial function contributing to the disease progression. Diagnosis and treatment strategies for NMDs focus on identifying genetic mutations and mitochondrial pathways involved in the development of the disease.
