National introduction of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Tanzania: Programmatic decision-making and implementation

Summary: This study highlights Tanzania's efforts in preventing cervical cancer, including the introduction of HPV vaccines and the accomplishment of most of the planned vaccination. The work involved collaboration between government departments, the World Health Organization, and other partners, with training and meetings conducted at various levels for advocacy and promotion. While the coverage for the first dose of the vaccine is relatively high, efforts are still needed to improve the uptake of the second dose.

Correlates of human papillomavirus vaccine knowledge and acceptability among medical and allied health students in Northern Nigeria

Summary: Most medical and allied health students in Kano, Nigeria, were willing to receive HPV vaccination despite having sub-optimal knowledge and low vaccine uptake. Factors such as gender, course of study, family history, and knowledge level of HPV were predictors of vaccine acceptance. These findings could help in the implementation and evaluation of HPV vaccine uptake as it expands across Africa.

Summary: This study estimates the public health benefits of pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines based on the actual number of doses delivered. From 2009 to 2019, approximately 143 million children received the rotavirus vaccine, avoiding an estimated 18.7 million severe rotavirus disease cases and 153,000 deaths. From 2011 to 2019, about 146 million children received the pneumococcal vaccine, avoiding an estimated 5.0 million severe pneumococcal disease cases and 587,000 deaths.

Challenges and lessons from a school-based human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program for adolescent girls in a rural Nigerian community

Summary: The study found that knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer is generally good among female students in rural Nigeria. Due to COVID-19, some students were unable to complete the vaccine dosage within the recommended timeframe. Parents who provided consent were unable to afford the vaccine costs out of pocket.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

National implementation of HPV vaccination programs in low-resource countries: Lessons, challenges, and future prospects

Summary: The paper reviews the experience of low-and middle-income countries that have introduced HPV vaccines, focusing on sustainability and scale-up challenges. Despite successes in reaching eligible girls, there are still considerable challenges to overcome, such as rumors, reaching out-of-school girls, and estimating target populations. New opportunities, such as additional vaccine manufacturers and one-dose delivery studies, could help address barriers to higher coverage and financial sustainability.

Awareness, acceptability and uptake of cervical cancer vaccination services among female secondary school teachers in Enugu, Nigeria: a cross-sectional study

Summary: The study revealed that female secondary school teachers in Enugu, Nigeria had low knowledge levels of cervical cancer vaccine but high acceptability among those aware of the vaccines. However, a low percentage of respondents had taught their students about cervical cancer or HPV vaccines, and even fewer had a program in their school that addressed cervical cancer or cervical cancer vaccination.
