Current practice in animal models for pelvic floor dysfunction

Fei Fang et al.

Summary: This study explored the current practice of using animal models for female pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and found that rats are the most applicable animal type for modeling methods. Vaginal dilation is the most widely used modeling method for research on the pathogenesis, pathological changes, and treatment of PFD.

Summary: Bothersome stress urinary incontinence occurred in 10% of patients after prolapse surgery. The prediction model containing six predictors showed superior performance compared to the existing CUPIDO model, suggesting its potential usefulness in guiding patient decision making. Further validation in diverse cohorts is necessary to confirm the predictive value of this model.

Summary: This study evaluated the 10-year outcomes of high uterosacral ligaments suspension as a primary repair for apical prolapse and found that it remained a safe and effective procedure even 10 years after surgery. Premenopausal status and lack of anterior and posterior repair were identified as long-term risk factors for surgical failure.

Meshy business: MRI and ultrasound evaluation of pelvic floor mesh and slings

Roopa Ram et al.

Summary: Pelvic floor disorders, including stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, commonly affect older and multiparous women. Surgical options such as synthetic mid-urethral slings and vaginal mesh can be evaluated using ultrasound and MRI techniques. Ultrasound is useful for assessing immediate peri-urethral portions of slings, while MRI provides a better visualization of overall pelvic floor anatomy and distant components of mesh and slings materials. Radiologists should be familiar with imaging findings post-surgical repair for pelvic floor disorders.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate online user behavior on pelvic-mesh related articles and article accuracy following the FDA's suspension of transvaginal mesh products for pelvic organ prolapse in April 2019. The research found that during peak activity, some of the most disseminated information did not accurately distinguish the type of mesh being discussed, and the number of related articles decreased significantly after peak interest subsided.

Summary: This study investigated the use of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as an alternative material for surgical mesh implants instead of polypropylene (PP), and hormone-loaded meshes were produced using fused deposition modelling. The results showed that TPU meshes were more suitable for pelvic floor repair than PP, and 3D printed meshes exhibited linear release of 17-beta-estradiol (E2) over a two weeks period.

Association between surgical volumes and real-world healthcare cost when using a mesh capturing device for pelvic organ prolapse: A 5-years comparison between single- versus multicenter use

Edward Morcos et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between surgical volume and healthcare costs by comparing a high surgical volume center with a lower volume multiple-site setting. The results showed that using a mesh kit for apical pelvic organ prolapse in a high surgical volume center was associated with reduced healthcare costs, especially during follow-up. This cost reduction was likely due to lower rates of surgical and medical re-interventions for postoperative complications and recurrence.

Summary: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common chronic illness that greatly impacts women's quality of life. Tissue engineering has made significant progress in its treatment, with an emphasis on biological scaffolds. However, there are still challenges in pelvic floor reconstruction, such as the development of ideal scaffolds, selection of optimal seed cells, and growth factors that need to be addressed for further advancement in this field.

Summary: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common gynecological benign disease occurring in middle-aged and elderly females, with its incidence increasing every year. Recent research has shown that molecular mechanisms associated with POP mainly involve reduction of extracellular matrix, activation of oxidative stress, genetic susceptibility, denervation of the pelvic floor, and reduction of estrogen infiltration.
