A Review on Biomaterials for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology: From Past to Present

Grzegorz Szczesny et al.

Summary: The principal features essential for the success of an orthopaedic implant are its shape, dimensional accuracy, and adequate mechanical properties. The clinical usefulness of biomaterials in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma surgery depends on the combination of mechanical and biological properties. Materials commonly used for these applications include stainless steel, cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys, ceramics, polyethylene, and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. This study reviews the properties of commonly used materials and discusses potential directions for future implant development, with an emphasis on developing advanced personalised implants.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti-25Nb-4Ta-8Sn Alloy Prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering

Ilona Vonavkova et al.

Summary: In this study, a quaternary Ti-25Nb-4Ta-8Sn alloy was prepared using the spark plasma sintering method and heat treated. The results showed that the spark plasma sintering method produced samples with low porosity and fine-grained structure, leading to higher mechanical properties. Annealed samples showed improved modulus of elasticity, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength, but decreased ductility.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing of a Low-Modulus Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta Alloy for Orthopedic Applications

Naresh Nadammal et al.

Summary: Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) was used to additively manufacture a new generation orthopedic beta titanium alloy Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta for patient-specific implants. Different energy density inputs were tested and higher input resulted in improved densification and minimal defects. X-ray microcomputed tomography and X-ray diffraction analysis showed the influence of temperature gradients on the material properties. The fabricated Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta exhibited high ductility and good cytocompatibility, making it a promising material for biomedical applications.

Jonathan Willis et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the effects of Ti-6Al-4 V on oral environment cells and finds that in neutral environments, the material has little effect on fibroblasts, but corrosion or wear may lead to the increased cytotoxic effect of released vanadium and aluminium particles. Concerns should be raised in clinical settings regarding the use of this alloy in medical implants.
