Dysregulation of GABAergic Signaling in Neurodevelomental Disorders: Targeting Cation-Chloride Co-transporters to Re-establish a Proper E/I Balance

Enrico Cherubini et al.

Summary: The construction of the brain relies on well-defined mechanisms, including GABA transmission, to establish and refine neuronal circuits. Dysfunction in GABA transmission can lead to neurological disorders. This review summarizes recent research on the functional role of GABA transmission in neuronal circuit development and its dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Stress and Western diets increase vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders: A common mechanism

Alexies Dagnino-Subiabre

Summary: Stress and Western diets are major environmental risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders. The interaction between dietary long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), endocannabinoids, and stress may affect brain physiology and vulnerability to these disorders. An over-activation of the endocannabinoid system in limbic areas due to increased n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in neurons' plasma membrane may lead to excitatory/inhibitory imbalance and synchronization issues in brain areas controlling stress responses.

Possible involvement of fatty acid binding proteins in psychiatric disorders

Yui Yamamoto et al.

Summary: PUFAs play a crucial role in brain development and function, and an imbalance may be associated with human psychiatric disorders. FABPs act as cellular chaperones for PUFAs, regulating their balance in the brain and playing a significant role in neuronal plasticity.

Effects of n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation in the Prevention and Treatment of Depressive Disorders-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Maike Wolters et al.

Summary: The review found that supplementation of n-3 PUFAs has a modest beneficial effect on depressive symptoms, particularly in individuals with longer treatment duration and those without depression or with mild to moderate depression. However, there are differences in effects based on different EPA dosages, and the overall quality of evidence remains insufficient.

Mental Health in Childhood and Adolescence: The Role of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Paola Bozzatello et al.

Summary: Research has confirmed the importance of polyunsaturated fatty acids in brain development and function, but there is limited information on the effects of fatty acid supplementation in children and adolescents. This review aims to provide an updated account of the impact of fatty acids on developmental psychopathology in youth and the role of supplementation in high-risk populations.
