Summary: Metabolic syndrome, associated with obesity, increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary diseases, stroke, and other disabilities. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) theory suggests that early developmental environmental imbalance affects health and predisposes individuals to non-communicable diseases, including metabolic syndrome. The 'Thrifty Phenotype' hypothesis proposes that undernourished fetuses develop evolutionary advantageous traits for survival in a hangry environment after birth, but this phenotype increases the risk of metabolic syndrome under an obesogenic diet. Chronic inflammation, referred to as 'Metaflammation', is believed to mediate the connection between obesity and metabolic disorders in metabolic syndrome. However, the contribution of evolutionary maladaptation to the pathophysiology of 'Metaflammation' remains understudied. Investigating 'Metaflammation' from the perspective of selective advantages and mismatches to contemporary lifestyles can provide valuable insights, considering the concept of evolutionarily conserved nutrient sensing and immune signaling systems.

Locomotor Adaptation Deficits in Older Individuals With Cognitive Impairments: A Pilot Study

Summary: Gait dysfunction and fall risk in people with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have been well studied. This study used the split-belt walking task to evaluate locomotor adaptation in older individuals with MCI and AD compared to healthy older adults (HOA), and found a significant decrease in locomotor adaptation capacity in MCI and AD patients. Furthermore, there were significant correlations between early adaptation and de-adaptation magnitude with cognitive test scores, indicating that individuals with greater cognitive impairment also had reduced capacity to adapt their walking. This study is an important step in understanding the underlying mechanisms of locomotor dysfunction in older individuals with cognitive impairment.

Global, regional, and national burden of diseases and injuries for adults 70 years and older: systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study

Summary: Based on the data analysis of GBD 2019, the global population of older adults has increased since 1990, and overall mortality rates have decreased for both men and women. However, mortality rates due to falls have increased during the same period. The probability of death among people aged 70-90 has decreased, mainly due to reductions in non-communicable diseases. Globally, disability burden is mainly driven by functional decline, vision and hearing loss, and symptoms of pain. Life expectancy at age 70 (LE-70) and healthy life expectancy at age 70 (HALE-70) have shown continuous increases since 1990, with regional disparities. Higher LE-70 results in higher HALE-70 and slightly increased proportion of years in ill health at age 70 (PYIH-70). Sociodemographic factors, healthcare access and quality indices are positively correlated with HALE-70 and LE-70. Limited data are available for various dietary, environmental or occupational, and metabolic risks.
