Metabolic-endocrine disruption due to preterm birth impacts growth, body composition, and neonatal outcome

Lea Sophie Moellers et al.

Summary: Despite optimized nutrition, preterm-born infants tend to grow slowly and accumulate body fat excessively due to the premature dissociation of the maternal-placental-fetal unit, leading to endocrine disruptions resembling panhypopituitarism. Interventions with IGF therapy have shown promising effects on improving neonatal morbidity and growth in preterm infants, emphasizing the importance of addressing hormonal deficiencies in this population.

Mitochondrial uncoupling protein-2 reprograms metabolism to induce oxidative stress and myofibroblast senescence in age-associated lung fibrosis

Sunad Rangarajan et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence that elevated levels of the mitochondrial protein UCP2 are associated with age-related diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. UCP2 is shown to contribute to the generation of reactive oxygen species and altered cellular bioenergetics, as well as induce myofibroblast senescence. The findings suggest that targeting UCP2 could be a potential therapeutic strategy for age-related diseases associated with impaired tissue regeneration and organ fibrosis.

Selenoprotein DIO2 Is a Regulator of Mitochondrial Function, Morphology and UPRmt in Human Cardiomyocytes

Nils Bomer et al.

Summary: In this study, we identified DIO2 as a member of the fetal-gene-program and a key regulator of mitochondrial function in human cardiomyocytes. Silencing DIO2 resulted in increased reactive oxygen species, impaired activation of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response, severely impaired mitochondrial respiration and reduced cellular viability. Our results suggest a key position of human DIO2 as a regulator of mitochondrial function in human cardiomyocytes.

PINK1 mediates the protective effects of thyroid hormone T3 in hyperoxia-induced lung injury

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that thyroid hormone can reduce lung injury and inflammation in a hyperoxic environment, promoting mitochondrial survival. PINK1(-/-) mice are more susceptible to hyperoxia, but pretreatment with T3 can improve their mitochondrial function. Therefore, PINK1 plays a crucial role in mediating the protective effects of thyroid hormone in acute lung injury.

Hyperoxia Leads to Transient Endocrine Alterations in the Neonatal Rat During Postnatal Development

Mirjam Kowallick et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated transient endocrine alterations following hyperoxia in neonatal rats, suggesting a potential contribution of oxygen to endocrine changes seen in preterm infants. Rational use of therapeutic oxygen in the treatment of preterm infants is crucial due to the detrimental effects of hyperoxia on multiple organs of the immature organism.

Summary: MSCs have become a focus of attention in tissue repair and wound healing. Recent studies have shown the importance of apoptosis in MSC-mediated immunomodulation. High hydrostatic pressure treatment induced complete apoptosis in MSCs, offering potential for manipulated products in cell-based therapies.
