Triply periodic minimal surfaces based honeycomb structures with tuneable mechanical responses

Chenxi Peng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel honeycomb structure inspired by TPMS architecture, which has tuneable mechanical responses. Experimental and numerical results show that the proposed structure has higher elastic modulus and plateau stress compared to traditional honeycomb structures. Additionally, by introducing density gradient or a hybrid structure with different topologies, the mechanical response of the structure can be tuned.

Summary: Although mutually independent, simultaneous sound absorption and superior mechanical properties are often sought after in a material. Herein, we propose a bamboo-inspired design strategy to overcome the aforementioned challenges. The concept is experimentally verified through samples fabricated using selective laser melting with the Inconel 718 alloy, and high sound absorption coefficients, damage-tolerant behavior, high specific strength, and high specific energy absorption have been realized in this design.

Design and analysis of an auxetic metamaterial with tuneable stiffness

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: Auxetic materials have weaker stiffness compared to solid structures due to internal holes, but a new methodology using variable stiffness scale factor (VSF) has been proposed to enhance their stiffness. Experimental investigation showed that the designed VSF can be effectively tuned by changing the height of the deformation area.

Bending behavior of 3D printed mechanically robust tubular lattice metamaterials

Huan Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel auxetic tubular lattice (ATL) structure with negative Poisson's ratio was designed and fabricated, exhibiting higher ductility and compliance compared to conventional diamond tubular lattice (DTL) structures. Finite element simulations showed that stress distribution in ATL structures is localized, providing excellent global stability. Parameter studies revealed that bending stiffness, maximum load, and ductility of ATL structures are mainly influenced by beam depth, with deep beams contributing significantly to moment of inertia and ductility improvements.

Experimental and computational investigations of novel 3D printed square tubular lattice metamaterials with negative Poisson's ratio

Dong Han et al.

Summary: Novel 3D printed square auxetic tubular lattice (SATL) structures were designed, fabricated and investigated. The mechanical properties of SATL structures, including their response to axial and lateral loads, were examined. Compared to circular auxetic tubular (CATL) structures, SATL structures demonstrated lower peak force under axial load and higher stiffness and specific energy absorption under lateral load. Improved SATL structures (ISATL) exhibited stronger energy absorption capacity under both axial and lateral loads.

Summary: This study designed and manufactured novel TPMS-based scaffolds with twisted feature using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to mimic human bone properties. Experimental and computational analyses showed that the twist angle affected the porosity, surface area, and deviation of the specimens. The manufactured scaffolds exhibited favorable mechanical properties and permeability, similar to human bones. The twist angle also influenced the compressive response and mass transport properties.
