Metallurgy, mechanistic models and machine learning in metal printing

T. DebRoy et al.

Summary: Metal printing is widely used in key industries to produce complex parts that are difficult to manufacture conventionally, with metallurgy, mechanistic models, and machine learning driving its continued growth. Additive manufacturing allows for the printing of metallic parts with specific chemical compositions and properties, but the selection of alloys, printing processes, and variables results in a diverse range of microstructures, properties, and defects that impact the serviceability of printed parts.

Investigation of Solidification and Precipitation Behavior of Si-Modified 7075 Aluminum Alloy Fabricated by Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion

Guichuan Li et al.

Summary: The study developed a Si-modified Al7075 alloy to reduce solidification cracking during L-PBF, resulting in crack-free samples with improved microstructure and grain size. The addition of Si, Mg2Si, and Al2Cu phases in the modified alloy contributed to the enhanced mechanical properties and age hardening resistance.

Laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of highly conductive parts made of optically absorptive carburized CuCr1 powder

Suraj Dinkar Jadhav et al.

Summary: This article explores the use of optically absorptive surface-modified copper powders for fabricating fully dense and highly conductive copper alloy parts via laser-based additive manufacturing (L-AM). It discusses the densification mechanism of parts and the distinct processing behaviors of different surface-modified powders. The advantage of a firmly bonded modified layer present on the surface of carburized CuCr1 powder over a loosely attached carbon nanoparticle layer in carbon-mixed CuCr1 powder is clearly outlined, with customized final properties achievable through tailored post-heat treatments.

A high strength AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion with addition of Al-Ti-C-B master alloy powders

Tong Gao et al.

Summary: A feasible method to enhance the mechanical performance of L-PBF fabricated AlSi10Mg alloy has been developed by introducing Al-Ti-C-B master alloy powders. The addition of TiCB inoculants significantly refines alpha-Al grains and Al-Si eutectic cells, while also providing particle reinforcement through TiCB and Si precipitates. The method shows promise for designing Al alloy powders suitable for L-PBF process, offering new insights for utilizing particle-contained Al-based master alloys in decorating other commercial powders.
