Low fish meal diet supplemented with probiotics ameliorates intestinal barrier and immunological function of Macrobrachium rosenbergii via the targeted modulation of gut microbes and derived secondary metabolites

Xiaochuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cottonseed protein concentrate (CPC) substitution of fish meal and Bacillus coagulans intervention on gut microbes, secondary metabolites, and intestinal immunity of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The results show that CPC substitution leads to a decrease in digestive enzyme activities and gut barrier protein expression, as well as an increase in inflammatory-related factors. B. coagulans treatment mitigates the negative changes and improves the expression levels of barrier factors and reparative cytokines.

Akkermansia muciniphila Alleviates Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS)-Induced Acute Colitis by NLRP3 Activation

Siwen Qu et al.

Summary: Akkermansia muciniphila has been shown to play a crucial role in the progression of colitis, with its protective effects in acute colitis depending on NLRP3 activation. This study enriches the understanding of the mechanisms underlying A. muciniphila's effects and offers a new prospect for probiotic-based treatments of colitis. The interaction between gut microbiota and host immune response plays a significant role in intestinal inflammatory diseases.

An emerging role of Prevotella histicola on estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss through the gut microbiota-bone axis in postmenopausal women and in ovariectomized mice

Zhongxiang Wang et al.

Summary: Analysis of gut microbiota in postmenopausal women revealed reduced levels of Prevotella in those with osteoporosis. Treatment with P. histicola in ovariectomized mice maintained higher bone volume and protected against estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss by modulating gut permeability and inhibiting osteoclast activity through cytokine expression attenuation. The genus Prevotella may serve as a therapeutic target for osteoporosis.

Probiotics ameliorate alveolar bone loss by regulating gut microbiota

Leming Jia et al.

Summary: This study found that probiotics effectively prevented inflammatory alveolar bone resorption in OVX rats by enriching butyrate-producing genera and improving gut barrier function. Probiotics also suppressed estrogen deprivation-induced inflammatory responses, as evidenced by reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines and balanced distribution of immune cells in bone marrow. These findings suggest that probiotics can serve as a promising adjuvant in the treatment of alveolar bone loss under estrogen deficiency.

Identification of Allobaculum mucolyticum as a novel human intestinal mucin degrader

Guus H. van Muijlwijk et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiota plays a key role in intestinal health and disease, with some bacteria linked to human diseases exploiting the inner mucus layer as an important niche. A newly identified IBD-associated species, Allobaculum mucolyticum, was found to carry up to 60 genes encoding putative Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) that may contribute to mucosal colonization. Mass spectrometry revealed the presence of 49 CAZymes, with 26 significantly enriched in its secretome, suggesting that A. mucolyticum's CAZyme secretion may facilitate bacterial colonization and degradation of the mucus layer.
