Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium uses anaerobic respiration to overcome propionate-mediated colonization resistance

Catherine D. Shelton et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota produces inhibitory metabolites to limit the expansion of enteric pathogens. However, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Tm) is able to use propionate, a metabolite produced by the microbiota, as a carbon source to overcome its inhibitory effects and gain a colonization advantage during infection. The colonization advantage is dependent on inflammation. Germ-free mice infected with S. Tm do not show this advantage in the intestinal lumen unless they are colonized with a propionate-producing bacterium.

A Proximal-to-Distal Survey of Healthy Adult Human small Intestine and Colon Epithelium by Single-Cell Transcriptomics

Joseph Burclaff et al.

Summary: This study utilizes single-cell transcriptomics to analyze the cellular function of the healthy adult human small intestine and colon. The findings reveal novel lineage marker genes, regional differences, and the response of cells to the environment and drugs. It advances our understanding of human intestinal physiology.

Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Improves LPS-Induced Lipid Disorder and Organ Injury by Regulating Metabolomic Characteristics in Mice

Tiantian Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that FGF19 can improve sepsis-related metabolic disorder and organ injury. FGF19 pretreatment reverses the increase of LPS-induced fatty acids and improves serum LA and GLA levels by regulating oxidative stress and mitochondrial function. Additionally, FGF19 reduces the generation of reactive oxygen species and protects liver, ileum, and kidney against LPS-induced injury.

Human Colon Cancer-Derived Clostridioides difficile Strains Drive Colonic Tumorigenesis in Mice

Julia L. Drewes et al.

Summary: This study reveals the role of toxigenic Clostridioides difficile in promoting colorectal cancer, suggesting that chronic colonization with this pathogenic bacteria may drive tumor development through the induction of Wnt signaling, reactive oxygen species, and protumorigenic mucosal immune responses.

Loss of Corpus-Specific Lipids in Helicobacter pylori-Induced Atrophic Gastritis

Aung Soe Lin et al.

Summary: Helicobacter pylori infection triggers alterations in gastric lipid composition, potentially serving as new biomarkers for gastric atrophy and premalignant changes prior to development of stomach cancer. These alterations have important functional consequences for H. pylori-host interactions and the pathogenesis of gastric cancer.

The cecal appendix is correlated with greater maximal longevity in mammals

Maxime K. Collard et al.

Summary: The cecal appendix in mammals may be associated with increased longevity, but its exact function and selective advantage remain unclear, with multiple hypotheses coexisting. Research findings reveal the complex evolutionary history of the cecal appendix in mammals.

Murine Intrarectal Instillation of Purified Recombinant Clostridioides difficile Toxins Enables Mechanistic Studies of Pathogenesis

Nicholas O. Markham et al.

Summary: Clostridioides difficile is associated with nearly 225,000 antibiotic-associated diarrheal infections and almost 13,000 deaths per year in the United States. The intrarectal instillation mouse model with purified recombinant TcdA and TcdB provides flexibility to better understand structure/function relationships in different stages of CDI pathogenesis.
