Combined effects of host genetics and diet on human gut microbiota and incident disease in a single population cohort

Youwen Qin et al.

Summary: A study conducted on a large population-based cohort of 5,959 Finnish individuals identified genetic variations associated with gut microbial abundances. The study found 567 independent SNP-taxon associations, including associations with LCT, ABO, and MED13L genes. The findings shed light on the complex interactions between host genetics and gut microbiota, and their potential role in disease development.

Effect of host genetics on the gut microbiome in 7,738 participants of the Dutch Microbiome Project

Esteban A. Lopera-Maya et al.

Summary: Host genetics influence the gut microbiome, with the LCT and ABO genes showing significant associations with microbial composition and function. The associations at the LCT locus are modulated by lactose intake, while those at ABO can be explained by participant secretor status determined by their FUT2 genotype. Further loci also show potential associations with microbial taxa and pathways. Larger sample sizes are needed to fully understand the effects of host genetics on the gut microbiome.

Pathogenicity, infective dose and altered gut microbiota in piglets infected with porcine deltacoronavirus

Jizong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the pathogenicity of porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) at different infective doses and the changes in gut microbiota composition in PDCoV-induced diarrhea piglets were investigated. The results showed that PDCoV infection caused a decrease in bacterial diversity and richness, and significant alterations in the structure and abundance of the gut microbiota. It was also found that these changes in the microbiota affected various physiological systems. These findings suggest that regulating the gut microbiota community may be an effective approach for preventing PDCoV infection.

Differential Effect of Dietary Fibers in Intestinal Health of Growing Pigs: Outcomes in the Gut Microbiota and Immune-Related Indexes

Yuheng Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different dietary fibers on the growth performance, intestinal barrier, and immune-related indexes in growing pigs. The results showed that pea-hull fiber had a negative effect on growth performance, while oat bran and a mixture of pea-hull fiber and oat bran had benefits for intestinal health. The improvement in immune function was mainly observed in the ileum, while the improvement in intestinal barrier function was mainly observed in the colon. Multiple-sourced dietary fiber may reduce the adverse effects of single-sourced dietary fiber on growth performance and gut microbiota in pigs.

Summary: This study presents the results of the second round of the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation challenges (CAMI II), which is a community-driven effort for comprehensively benchmarking tools for metagenomics data analysis. The results show substantial improvements in assembly, but related strains and assembly quality still pose challenges. Taxon profilers and binners excel at higher bacterial ranks but underperform for viruses and Archaea. The need to improve reproducibility is emphasized by the clinical pathogen detection results.

Individuality and ethnicity eclipse a short-term dietary intervention in shaping microbiomes and viromes

Junhui Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted multiomic profiling and a 4-day controlled vegetarian diet intervention on 36 healthy Black and White females of similar age, weight, habitual diets, and health status in a defined geographic location. The results showed that individuality and ethnicity play a significant role in taxonomic variation in the microbiome, overshadowing the effects of short-term diet intervention. Persistent differences between ethnicities were observed in microbial and viral taxa, as well as various metagenomic functions. In contrast, urine and plasma metabolites showed stronger associations with diet rather than ethnicity.
