A Survey of CO, CO2, and H2O in Comets and Centaurs

Summary: CO and CO2 are the dominant carbon-bearing molecules in comets. Their relative abundances provide constraints to models of solar system formation and evolution. This study analyzed measurements of CO and CO2 production rates for 25 comets and found that about half have more CO2 than CO. The production of CO2 appears to be more closely tied to water production than CO. Jupiter Family Comets tend to produce more CO2 than CO, while Oort Cloud comets produce more CO2 relative to CO. The volatile carbon/oxygen ratio suggests that comets form within the CO snow line.
