Chemical Mixing Induced by Internal Gravity Waves in Intermediate-mass Stars

A. Varghese et al.

Summary: Internal gravity waves have a significant impact on the mixing within the radiative interiors of stars. By studying the diffusion profiles of different mass and age models, we find that the mixing profile changes dramatically across age, with younger stars showing an increase in diffusion coefficient towards the surface and older stars experiencing a decreasing trend. Additionally, mixing is stronger in more massive stars. We propose a prescription to include this mixing in 1D stellar evolution models by identifying the dominant waves contributing to the mixing profiles.

The observed multiplicity properties of B-type stars in the Galactic young open cluster NGC6231

G. Banyard et al.

Summary: Through multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of 80 B-type stars in the NGC 6231 cluster, we found that the observed spectroscopic binary fraction is approximately 33%, while the true spectroscopic binary fraction is around 52%. Out of the 20 systems with orbital solutions, their orbital parameter distributions are similar to B-type and O-type stars in both the galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Backtracing the internal rotation history of the β Cep star HD 129929

S. J. A. J. Salmon et al.

Summary: HD 129929 is a massive slowly rotating giant star with differential rotation between the core and surface. The surface rotation speed is estimated to be around 2km/s. The models based on hydrodynamic processes are consistent with the asteroseismic measurements, while the models considering the Tayler magnetic instability do not match the observations.

M. Riello et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the photometric content in Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3), describing the input data, algorithms, processing, and validation of results. Significant improvements were made in the processing, particularly in the preprocessing and calibration of blue and red photometer data. The overall quality of calibrated mean photometry in Gaia EDR3 is superior to DR2 for all bands.

Automated approach to measure stellar inclinations: validation through large-scale measurements on the red giant branch

C. Gehan et al.

Summary: Measuring stellar inclinations is crucial for understanding planetary formation, dynamics, and physical conditions during star formation. This study aims to develop an automated approach for measuring stellar inclinations applicable to solar-type pulsators and validate it using observed red giant branch stars. By analyzing dipole mixed modes with different azimuthal orders, the study successfully derived the statistical distribution of inclinations in an unbiased manner.

Probing the interior physics of stars through asteroseismology

C. Aerts

Summary: High-precision brightness measurements collected over years using telescopes in space have enabled astronomers to study the physics of stellar interiors through nonradial oscillations. The field of asteroseismology has provided new insights into how stars rotate and evolve chemically. Data-driven space asteroseismology has significantly improved computer models of star evolution, which are crucial for various research fields in space science and have potential applications in the search for extraterrestrial life and studies of supernova progenitors.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

New predictions for radiation-driven, steady-state mass-loss and wind-momentum from hot, massive stars: II. A grid of O-type stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds

R. Bjorklund et al.

Summary: Reliable predictions of mass-loss rates and wind-momentum rates of O-type stars were provided by using newly developed steady-state models. The results showed a strong dependence of mass-loss on both luminosity and metallicity. The computed rates were systematically lower than those commonly used in stellar-evolution calculations, suggesting a need for new rates in evolution simulations of massive stars.

Probing the temperature gradient in the core boundary layer of stars with gravito-inertial modes: The case of KIC 7760680

M. Michielsen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal and chemical structure in the near-core region of stars with a convective core using gravito-inertial modes, focusing on the B-type star KIC 7760680 rotating at a quarter of its critical rotation velocity. The results suggest that period spacings of modes with consecutive radial order offer a better diagnostic for asteroseismic modelling of stars with high-order gravito-inertial modes, with simpler models without convective boundary mixing being statistically preferred for KIC 7760680.

Internal mixing of rotating stars inferred from dipole gravity modes

May G. Pedersen et al.

Summary: Observations of 26 rotating stars with masses between 3 and 10 solar masses reveal a wide range of internal mixing levels, with models incorporating radially stratified mixing profiles showing the best asteroseismic performance. This study provides observational guidance for three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of transport processes in the deep interiors of stars, based on gravity modes probing the stars' deep interiors near the convective core. The internal mixing levels in the analyzed stars are unexpectedly varied and are best reproduced with models incorporating radially stratified mixing profiles.

Summary: We re-analyzed the light curves of 38 known Kepler SPB stars to detect direct non-linear resonant mode coupling among the largest-amplitude gravity modes. Results show that the majority of these stars reveal direct non-linear resonances based on the largest-amplitude modes, making them prime targets for non-linear asteroseismic modeling.

One size does not fit all: Evidence for a range of mixing efficiencies in stellar evolution calculations

C. Johnston

Summary: Internal chemical mixing in intermediate- and high-mass stars is a major uncertainty in stellar evolution models. This study demonstrates that stellar models regularly underestimate the masses of convective stellar cores. In order to accurately reproduce high-precision observations, stellar models require a more efficient mixing mechanism that produces more massive cores throughout the main sequence.
