Cu thorn-ZrO2 interfacial sites with highly dispersed copper nanoparticles derived from Cu@UiO-67 hybrid for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Guoqing Chen et al.

Summary: A series of Cu@ZrO2-U framework catalysts with adjustable copper loadings were prepared from Cu@UiO-67 precursors by deposition-precipitation method, and their catalytic activities for methanol synthesis via CO2 hydrogenation were investigated. The optimized 20-Cu@ZrO2-U catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity, with a space-time yield of CH3OH (STYCH3OH) reaching 2.28 mmolCH3OH/(gcat$h) at 3 MPa and 260 degrees C, which was 3.5 times higher than that of 20-Cu/ZrO2. The catalyst also showed good stability during the 100-hour time-on-stream test. XRD, N2 sorption, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR, CO2/H2-TPD, and in situ DRIFTS were used for the characterization of the catalysts, revealing that the stable ZrO2 framework derived from UiO-67 facilitated the confinement of copper nanoparticles and the formation of Cu+-ZrO2 interfacial sites, which contributed to the excellent performance in methanol synthesis. In addition, in situ DRIFTS demonstrated that the methanol synthesis over 20-Cu@ZrO2-U followed a HCOO*-intermediated reaction pathway.

Integrated CO2 Capture and Conversion to Methanol Leveraged by the Transfer Hydrogenation Approach

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: This research successfully established a catalytic transfer hydrogenation process for the conversion of chemically captured CO2 into MeOH using ethylene glycol as the hydride donor. The Ru(II)-CNN pincer catalyst and TMEDA were found to be the most effective combination, resulting in a MeOH yield of up to 64% and 112 catalytic turnovers. The use of a dilute CO2 stream (10% in N2) also provided a similar MeOH yield of approximately 70% in this integrated protocol.

Engineering nanoscale H supply chain to accelerate methanol synthesis on ZnZrOx

Kyungho Lee et al.

Summary: Metal promotion is commonly used to enhance the hydrogenation functionality of an oxide catalyst, but insufficient hydrogen delivery may compromise the enhancement effect. In this study, the authors introduced a strategy to promote a ZnZrOx methanol synthesis catalyst by optimizing the integration of ZnZrOx and Pd supported on carbon nanotube (Pd/CNT) to improve hydrogen activation and delivery. The Pd/CNT + ZnZrOx system demonstrated a 10-fold enhancement compared to the conventional Pd-promoted ZnZrOx catalyst in delivering hydrogen to a broad area on the ZnZrOx surface. It exhibited significantly boosted activity and excellent stability in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, showing potential for practical implementation.

Development of highly active and coke-resilient Ni-based catalysts for low-temperature steam reformation of methane

Sardar Ali et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the development of highly active and stable catalysts for low temperature steam reformation of methane. The Ni-based catalysts supported on alumina were synthesized by the single step solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method. The catalyst 5NC exhibited superior activity and excellent stability for steam reformation of methane during the investigated period. The exceptional performance of the 5NC catalyst was attributed to the presence of surface defects, generation of nickel aluminates (NiAl2O4) nano-crystallites, uniform distribution and smaller metal oxide particle size.

Bimetallic Cu-Pt catalysts over nanoshaped ceria for hydrogen production via methanol decomposition

Luis Lopez-Rodriquez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic systems of Pt/CeO2 and bimetallic Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalysts supported on different CeO2 nano shapes (polyhedra, rods, and cubes) for hydrogen production from the methanol decomposition reaction. The properties of the bimetallic Cu-Pt/CeO2 samples were found to be support-morphology-dependent, with better copper and ceria reducibility in samples supported on polyhedra and rods. An improvement in oxygen vacancies was observed in the bimetallic system due to the interaction between copper and ceria. The bimetallic samples showed higher H-2 yield compared to platinum, making them suitable for hydrogen production from methanol decomposition.

The role of Cu1-O3 species in single-atom Cu/ZrO2 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation

Huibo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel copper-based catalyst with isolated active copper sites for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The Cu-1-O-3 units in the Cu-Zr catalyst are found to contribute solely to methanol synthesis, while small copper clusters or nanoparticles with Cu-Cu structural patterns are responsible for the formation of CO by-product. Additionally, the migration of Cu-1-O-3 units to the catalyst surface during the catalytic process accelerates CO2 hydrogenation. These findings extend the application potential of single-atom catalysts for thermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation and provide insights for the design of high-performance copper-based catalysts to meet industrial demand.
