A theoretical study of Cs(I) adsorption on kaolinite basal surfaces

Zhongcun Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption of Cs(I) on kaolinite basal surfaces was systematically investigated using density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics methods. It was found that Cs(I) adsorption configurations on siloxane surface are more stable than on aluminol surface, involving electron transfer and ionic characteristics. Additionally, adsorption of Cs(I) on aluminol surface is inhibited in aqueous environments due to hydrogen bonding. The results provide insights into the fixation mechanism of Cs(I) in clay minerals.

Immobilization mechanism of Cd2+/HCrO4-/CrO42- ions and carboxin on montmorillonite modified with Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii exopolysaccharide

Katarzyna Szewczuk-Karpisz et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impact of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) synthesized by Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii on the adsorptive features of montmorillonite. The results showed that EPS promoted the accumulation of heavy metals on the clay mineral and reduced their desorption, while it had the opposite effect on pesticide adsorption levels.

Adsorption of Cs(I) and Sr(II) on Bentonites with Different Compositions at Different pH

Yulia Izosimova et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the adsorption regularities and mechanisms of nonradioactive Cs(I) and Sr(II) analogs on bentonites with different chemical and mineral composition. The main mechanism is ion exchange, leading to the formation of outer-sphere complexes and, at higher pH values, inner-sphere complexes. Bentonite T exhibits higher adsorption capacity compared to other bentonites.

Cation hydration by confined water and framework-atoms have crucial role on thermodynamics of clay swelling

Sai Adapa et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the thermodynamic effects of different hydration properties of cations on clay swelling. It is found that the interaction between water molecules and mica framework atoms plays a crucial role in clay swelling. Na+ ions act as anchors on mica pores and share water molecules, while H+ ions exert osmotic pressure on mica frameworks, favoring swelling.

Effect and mechanism of cation species on the gel properties of montmorillonite

Haowei Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the valence of metal cations affects the negative charge of montmorillonite, thereby influencing its dispersion and gel properties. The impact of cations of different valences on montmorillonite follows the order of trivalent > monovalent > divalent, and the contribution of metal cations of the same valence to the negative charge is positively related to the atomic number.

Jingwan Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Zr-modified clays on phosphate adsorption, showing that Zr-modified montmorillonite had the fastest kinetics and highest capacity. The different performances of Zr-modified clays may be attributed to the distinct expansion properties. All Zr-modified clays demonstrated robust phosphate adsorption under various water chemistry conditions, with inner-sphere surface complexes formation being proposed as the primary mechanism.

One-pot synthesis of silicon-based zirconium phosphate for the enhanced adsorption of Sr (II) from the contaminated wastewater

Zihao Jiao et al.

Summary: The study showed that Sr adsorption on ZrP/MSP was highly dependent on pH and the concentration of metal ion, achieving larger adsorption capacity, faster adsorption equilibrium, and higher ion selectivity than those of bare ZrP under batch reaction conditions. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model separately fitted the adsorption isotherm and kinetic data better than the Freundlich and pseudo-first-order ones.

Effective removal of Co(II) and Sr(II) from radiocative wastes using covalent triazine frameworks: Kinetics and isotherm studies

Yan Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic adsorption of radionuclides Co(II) and Sr(II) onto covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) and found that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models performed better in describing the experimental data. The adsorption equilibrium time and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity varied for Co(II) and Sr(II) on different CTFs. Thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption process of Co(II) and Sr(II) onto CTF was spontaneous and endothermic, favored at higher temperature.
