Toxic responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana due to exposure of flame retardants

Dongyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicities of flame retardants (FRs) TBBPA, TDCPP, and TBP on microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana, including growth inhibition, photosynthetic activity inhibition, and oxidative damage, and assessed their ecological risks. The results showed that TBBPA, TDCPP, and TBP had inhibitory effects on C. sorokiniana, with different concentration levels. The damaged photosynthetic activity was reversible, and the content of chlorophyll a responded differently to different FRs concentrations. Increased reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress were observed with FRs exposure. The study also revealed the ecological risks of tested FRs in natural waters or wastewaters.

The Effect of Dichloromethane on Product Separation during Continuous Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Chlorella vulgaris and Aqueous Product Recycling for Algae Cultivation

Bingfeng Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that using DCM in the continuous HTL process can increase the biocrude yield, with 350 degrees Celsius being the optimal operating temperature. The AP contains more nitrogen and other ions, which is advantageous for nutrient recovery. AP treated with activated carbon absorption purification can enhance algae growth.

A novel strategy to simultaneously enhance bio-oil yield and nutrient recovery in sequential hydrothermal liquefaction of high protein microalgae

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the bio-oil yield, energy recovery, and nutrient recovery of sequential hydrothermal liquefaction (SEQ-HTL) by integrating aqueous phase (AP) recirculation and fungal-microalgal cultivation. The results show that this novel strategy can enhance the economic feasibility of processing high-protein microalgae biomass using the SEQ-HTL technique and has promising industrial applications for microalgae.

Co-liquefaction of Chlorella and soybean straw for production of bio-crude: Effects of reusing aqueous phase as the reaction medium

Songqi Leng et al.

Summary: Co-liquefaction combined with hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) aqueous phase (AP) recirculation can improve the practicality of the HTL process. It was found that different compounds were formed during the co-liquefaction and recirculation, which led to changes in the yield and chemical properties of the bio-crude and hydrochar.

FAME and bio-oil properties and carbon yield coefficients of Chlorella sorokiniana cultivated heterotrophically with industrial effluents

G. Papapolymerou et al.

Summary: This study examined the distribution of fatty acids in bi-oil derived from Chlorella sorokiniana and analyzed its basic properties. The results showed that the medium chain fatty acids C16-C18 were the predominant components in the bi-oil. The properties of the biodiesel were within acceptable ranges and varied due to differences in fatty acid distribution.

Semi-batch cultivation of Chlorella sorokiniana AK-1 with dual carriers for the effective treatment of full strength piggery wastewater treatment

Chun-Yen Chen et al.

Summary: This study optimized the process of microalgae-based piggery wastewater treatment by cultivating Chlorella sorokiniana AK-1 on untreated wastewater, achieving efficient COD/BOD/TN/TP removal and high biomass/protein productivities. The integration of immobilization carriers and semi-batch cultivation showed effective treatment of raw untreated piggery wastewater with high removal efficiencies. The innovative approach demonstrated excellent performance in simultaneously treating piggery wastewater and producing microalgal biomass.

Effect of catalyst and temperature on the quality and productivity of HTL bio-oil from microalgae: A review

Nishesh Sharma et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is considered an effective technology for biooil production, with algae biomass being recognized as one of the most suitable feedstocks. The choice of temperature, retention time, and catalyst significantly affect the efficiency of HTL products, with a temperature range around 280 +/- 40 degrees C being reported as the most suitable for maximum bio-oil yield. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been used to improve bio-oil generation, with heterogeneous catalysts preferred for their advantages such as improved bio-oil yield, easy recovery, and eco-friendly approach.

A Review of Microalgal Biofilm Technologies: Definition, Applications, Settings and Analysis

Jairo Hernan Moreno Osorio et al.

Summary: Biofilm-based algal cultivation offers many advantages over traditional methods, but understanding the complexity of biofilm nature remains a research challenge that requires real-time analysis of the system. Current research on biofilm includes life cycle, bioreactor design, carrier material screening, and non-destructive techniques for studying biofilm formation and performance. Perspectives for future research are also discussed to guide the further development of microalgal biofilm systems.
