Thermochemical pretreatment enhanced bioconversion of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum): insight on the production of sugars and lignin

Dibyajyoti Haldar et al.

Summary: This study aims to further utilize Pennisetum purpureum as a bioenergy crop through alkaline treatment. The results show that alkaline pretreatment of biomass can effectively remove lignin and enhance the recovery of carbohydrates under specific conditions. With the action of cellulase, a large amount of glucose can be produced, and product inhibition study concludes that externally added glucose and xylose have significant inhibitory effects on enzymatic production of sugars.

Study of cassava starch degradation using sonication process in aqueous sodium chloride

Bramantyo Airlangga et al.

Summary: This study found that sonication in aqueous NaCl solution can produce reducing sugar, with the amount relatively smaller compared to the total dissolved solid product. The increase in sonication amplitude was correlated with an increase in granule defect in SEM images. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the degradation process involved rupturing of the amorphous region, suggesting the potential usefulness of this process for starch modification.

Hydrothermal assisted isolation of microcrystalline cellulose from pepper (Piper nigrum L.) processing waste for making sustainable bio-composite

Holilah Holilah et al.

Summary: The conversion of industrial pepper bio-waste to microcrystalline cellulose was investigated as a reinforcement agent for natural polymer bio-composites. The study highlighted the importance of hydrothermal assisted alkalization for efficient separation of cellulose from lignin, leading to enhanced yield and crystallinity of MCC. Incorporating MCC into seaweed and chitosan natural polymer composites improved tensile strength and elongation, suggesting the potential for MCC as a reinforcement agent to replace traditional plastics.
