Conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in an H2O/tetrahydrofuran/cyclohexane biphasic system with Al-2(SO4)(3) as the catalyst

Ning Shi et al.

Summary: A simple and efficient biphasic system was used to convert cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase, concentration of Al-2(SO4)(3) in the aqueous phase, and concentration of Al-2(SO4)(3) in the organic phase played critical roles in the conversion of cellulose into HMF. The addition of cyclohexane (CHX) improved the stability of HMF in the reaction system. Under optimized conditions, a high HMF yield of 71.2% was obtained in the H2O-THF-CHX biphasic system.

A review of bio-refining process intensification in catalytic conversion reactions, separations and purifications of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural

Jernej Slak et al.

Summary: This review explores the utilization of process intensification (PI) techniques in the biorefining industry for 5-HMF and FUR production and purification, highlighting the potential of reactive extraction in microreactors and other approaches. While mineral acid-catalyzed aqueous systems yield the highest product yields, their purification and recycling are costly and laborious. Solid-acid catalysts in biphasic solvent systems show promise, with NaCl improving extraction power and selectivity. The pervaporation assisted continuous membrane reactor holds potential for large-scale FUR production.

Intensified reactive extraction for the acid-catalyzed conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural

Pierre Desir et al.

Summary: This study investigates fructose dehydration to HMF in a biphasic microreactor with high yields and optimal organic-to-water ratios identified at high temperatures. The research also uncovers the dual role of the solvent in both protecting HMF from degradation and modifying fundamental chemistry. Additionally, mass transfer limitations in microreactors at longer residence times and higher temperatures are revealed, highlighting the importance of reactor design and operation.

Conversion of Cellulose into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural in a Biphasic System Catalyzed by Aluminum Sulfate and Byproduct Characterization

Ning Shi et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the influence of catalyst type, organic solvent type and ratio, and other factors on the conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The highest HMF yield was obtained when using the H2O-THF-Al-2(SO4)(3) biphasic system. Further investigation revealed that the excellent performance of this system was due to its high surface area, high concentration, and low solubility. Additionally, the presence of initial polymers was detected using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Tuning Bronsted and Lewis acidity on phosphated titanium dioxides for efficient conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Siripit Songtawee et al.

Summary: Phosphated titanium dioxide has been shown to be an efficient catalyst for the conversion of glucose to HMF, achieving a 72% yield and 83% selectivity. By tuning the solvent system, controlling the number of acid sites, and modifying the reaction setup, the catalyst's performance can be enhanced. The addition of phosphate groups onto the surface of TiO2 significantly improves HMF yield and selectivity when the optimal ratio of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites is reached.

Development of a continuous-flow tubular reactor for synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose using heterogeneous solid acid catalysts in biphasic reaction medium

Sadra Souzanchi et al.

Summary: In this study, 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was successfully synthesized from biomass-derived fructose using heterogeneous solid acid catalysts in a continuous flow process. Various solid acid catalysts were tested, with niobium phosphate (NbP), synthetic sulphated niobia (NbS), and Amberlyst 36 (Amb. 36) demonstrating high selectivity and activity for the conversion of fructose to 5-HMF. The optimal reaction conditions were determined, and the Amb. 36 catalyst was selected for its consistent catalytic activity and selectivity over time. Additionally, the catalyst showed recyclability without losing its catalytic performance.
