Multiple effects of climate changes and human activities on NPP increase in the Three-north Shelter Forest Program area

Haibo Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of human activities and climate change on the trend of vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) in the Three-north Shelter Forest Program area (TSFPA) were investigated. The results showed that the pure, shared, and coupling effects of climate change and human activities interactively influence the persistence of the vegetation NPP increment. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the driving forces of vegetation NPP growth and persistence in ecological engineering areas, considering the pure, shared, and coupling effects of human activities and climate change.

Trends in grassland science: Based on the shift analysis of research themes since the early 1900s

Guiling Zhao

Summary: Grasslands, as a major terrestrial ecosystem, are experiencing extensive degradation. The development and exploration of grassland science are crucial for addressing challenges such as climate change and human activities. Using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modelling, an automated content analysis was conducted on 123,829 papers from 1900 to 2020 to identify research trends in grassland science. The analysis showed that grassland research has become more multidisciplinary, with a decrease in traditional production-oriented research and an increase in themes focusing on ecological functions and modern technologies. The study also revealed a global unevenness in research activities, with China and Brazil experiencing a significant increase in the number of publications.

Effects of patch-burn grazing and rotational grazing on grassland bird abundance, species richness, and diversity in native grassland pastures of the Midsouth USA

Christopher M. Lituma et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of rotational grazing and patch-burn grazing on grassland bird populations, revealing that landscape variables, within-field variables, and research sites exerted more influence on avian relative abundance than specific grazing treatments. Different bird species showed varied responses to the treatments, with some species experiencing an increase in relative abundance while others declined.

Biodiversity alleviates the decrease of grassland multifunctionality under grazing disturbance: A global meta-analysis

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The research shows that biodiversity plays a key role in mediating ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in response to intensifying grazing disturbance. The decrease in EMF induced by grazing is alleviated at high levels of plant diversity, and linearly increases with changes in plant diversity. Furthermore, longer grazing duration and more arid climates exacerbate the decrease in EMF caused by grazing.

Jasmine Cutter et al.

Summary: Land-use and land-cover change associated with agriculture is a major driver of biodiversity loss. This study compared the effects of sheep and cattle grazing on floral resources and butterfly abundance. The results showed that cattle pastures had higher flowering species richness and abundance, as well as greater butterfly diversity, compared to sheep pastures.

Mycorrhizal Patterns in the Roots of Dominant Festuca rubra in a High-Natural-Value Grassland

Larisa Corcoz et al.

Summary: Grassland ecosystems play a significant role as reservoirs for biodiversity and promote mycorrhizal symbiotic partnerships to meet nutritional requirements. The study focused on Festuca rubra, a dominant species in mountain grasslands, which showed a high acceptance for symbiotic partners. Quantification of the entire symbiosis process revealed that most root samples had a colonization intensity between 0% and 20%, with an average colonization degree of 35%. Arbuscule development potential was limited due to unbalanced root development and colonizing hyphal networks. Overall, the study highlights the importance of understanding the colonization patterns of dominant species in mountain grasslands for the stability and persistence of these ecosystems.

Grazing and global change factors differentially affect biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships in grassland ecosystems

Miao He et al.

Summary: Grazing and global change both have significant effects on grassland ecosystems, including reducing plant diversity and aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) while increasing belowground net primary productivity (BNPP). The impact of grazing on biodiversity-productivity relationship is positively correlated with the change in BNPP, but global change flips this relationship. Global change factors have a greater influence on belowground biodiversity-productivity relationship than grazing, contrary to the aboveground pattern. Therefore, incorporating global change factors and herbivore grazing into Earth system models is necessary for accurately predicting climate-grassland carbon cycle feedbacks in the Anthropocene.

Disentangling the assembly mechanisms of bacterial communities in a transition zone between the alpine steppe and alpine meadow ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau

Summary: This study reveals that rhizosphere bacterial communities in both alpine meadows and steppes exhibit higher alpha-diversity but lower beta-diversity compared to bacterial communities in sediments and bulk soils. The relationships between bacterial communities in different habitats weaken from meadows to steppes, and the drivers for the phylogenetic turnover of bacterial communities differ between meadows and steppes. These findings provide important insights into the differences in microbial communities between meadows and steppes in the grassland transition zone on the Tibetan Plateau.

N deposition may accelerate grassland degradation succession from grasses-and sedges-dominated into forbs-dominated in overgrazed alpine grassland systems on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Summary: The study found that overgrazing and increased N deposition alter the species composition and dominance of plant functional groups in alpine grasslands, shifting the community towards forb-dominated communities. These changes were driven by a combination of selective herbivory and enhanced forb photosynthetic rates. This suggests that future changes in grazing and N deposition may significantly impact the plant community composition in alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

This study in the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area in the Czech Republic examined how restoration methods, soil characteristics, time since sowing or abandonment, proximity effects, and climate influence vegetation changes in restored grasslands. Results showed that using regional seed mixtures increased the participation of dry grassland species, while using commercial seed mixtures and spontaneous succession favored mesic grassland species. The hierarchy of environmental factors influencing restoration varied, with restoration method and soil factors being the most crucial.
