No tillage decreases GHG emissions with no crop yield tradeoff at the global scale

Kai Yue et al.

Summary: No tillage reduces emissions of CO2, N2O, and CH4, decreasing the global warming potential, with no tradeoff on crop yield. Therefore, no tillage is an effective sustainable crop management practice for mitigating climate warming and providing food security.

Belowground processes and sustainability in agroecosystems with intercropping

Rui-Peng Yu et al.

Summary: Crop diversity plays a crucial role in supporting various ecosystem functions through root-root interactions. However, there are still research gaps in the design and management of multi-species and multi-cultivar systems. Both competition-based and facilitation-based intercropping systems have advantages and challenges, and further research is needed to understand the effects of belowground processes on soil fertility and ecosystem stability, to establish sustainable agroecosystems.

A review and meta-analysis of mitigation measures for nitrous oxide emissions from crop residues

Diego Abalos et al.

Summary: Crop residues are important for maintaining soil carbon stocks and fertility, but they can also increase nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The study found that removing residues, shallow incorporation, incorporating residues with a C:N ratio higher than 30, and avoiding incorporation of residues from crops terminated at an immature stage can significantly reduce N2O emissions. Other practices have less conclusive effects. Some of the evaluated measures may have negative side-effects on yield, soil organic carbon storage, nitrate leaching, and ammonia volatilization. Additional strategies, such as treating crop residues before application, co-application with inhibitors or materials with a high C:N ratio, and using residue mixtures, show potential for reducing N2O emissions without negative side-effects, but further research is needed.

Can N2O emissions offset the benefits from soil organic carbon storage?

Bertrand Guenet et al.

Summary: In order to meet the global warming targets set by the Paris Agreement, drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are required alongside large-scale deployment of other climate mitigation strategies. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is an important lever, but it must be considered that this may lead to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, offsetting some of the climate benefits.

Microbial process-oriented understanding of stimulation of soil N2O emission following the input of organic materials

Zhaoxiong Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the increase in N2O emissions in soil after adding plant residue was mainly due to increased emissions from nitrification and denitrification sources. Furthermore, an increase in the carbon/nitrogen ratio of plant residue can decrease total N2O emissions by reducing the contribution of denitrification to N2O emissions.
