Novel slurry additive reduces gaseous emissions during storage thereby improving renewable energy and fertiliser potential

Camilla E. Thorn et al.

Summary: Emissions from stored livestock manures are a significant source of greenhouse gases and ammonia. Slurry treatment technologies, such as the use of additives, can reduce gaseous emissions and preserve nutrient content. A study found that using a specific inhibitor on stored cattle slurry reduced gaseous emissions by up to 90%. Furthermore, the treated slurry produced more methane when anaerobically co-digested.

Decarbonization of Nitrogen Fertilizer: A Transition Engineering Desk Study for Agriculture in Germany

Florian Ahrens et al.

Summary: The use of fossil fuel and artificial nitrogen fertilizer in German agriculture poses several challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen pollution, and unsustainability. The most promising solutions for sustainable development are shifting consumption towards plant-based diet and promoting organic agriculture.

Comparison between organic and conventional farming systems using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): A case study with an ancient wheat variety

L. Verdi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the environmental impacts of organic and conventional farming on an ancient wheat variety in Tuscany, Italy. The results showed that organic farming had lower environmental impacts in most categories, while conventional farming had lower impacts on land use. Seawater ecotoxicity was identified as the category with the greatest impact in both cultivation systems.

Environmental sustainability performance of a membrane-based technology for livestock wastewater treatment with nutrient recovery

I. Gonzalez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology is an environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment option that can reduce ammonia emissions and recover nitrogen as nutrient. Compared to conventional manure management, it reduces global warming and marine eutrophication, but increases particulate matter formation and terrestrial acidification. Optimizing membrane design parameters further decreases these impacts but may increase freshwater eutrophication.

A review of trends and drivers of greenhouse gas emissions by sector from 1990 to 2018

William F. Lamb et al.

Summary: Global greenhouse gas emissions from five economic sectors show limited progress in reducing emissions. Decarbonization in energy systems is observed in Europe and North America, while fossil-based energy systems continue to expand in rapidly industrializing regions. Strong demand in Asia drives emissions growth in industry, buildings, and transport sectors, while agricultural expansion leads to emissions increases in tropical forest regions.

Pilot Plant for the Capture of Ammonia from the Atmosphere of Pig and Poultry Farms Using Gas-Permeable Membrane Technology

Maria Soto-Herranz et al.

Summary: Gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology shows promise in reducing NH3 emissions from livestock housing, with NH3 recovery rates varying based on NH3 concentration and seasonal differences. Higher ventilation frequency in summer months led to lower NH3 capture efficiency compared to winter months.
