A geoheritage valuation to prevent environmental degradation of a new volcanic landscape in the Canary Islands

Nicolas Ferrer et al.

Summary: On 19 September 2021, a new monogenetic volcano erupted on the Island of La Palma. It formed a pyroclastic cone and lava flows that reached the Atlantic Ocean. The environmental conservation of this volcanic landscape is important due to high anthropogenic pressure on land uses. Comparative and numerical methods were used to assess its geological value and support its protection.

Co-composted biochar derived from rice straw and sugarcane bagasse improved soil properties, carbon balance, and zucchini growth in a sandy soil: A trial for enhancing the health of low fertile arid soils

Ihab M. Farid et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pyrolysis, composting, and co-composting processes on the properties of biochar, compost, and co-composted biochar from rice straw and sugarcane bagasse, as well as the impact of these amendments on soil properties, carbon emissions, and the growth of zucchini in a sandy arid soil. The results showed that co-composted biochar, particularly the one from rice straw, had promising effects on improving soil quality and enhancing plant growth. However, further verification under field conditions is needed.

Copyrolysis of food waste and rice husk to biochar to create a sustainable resource for soil amendment: A pilot-scale case study in Jinhua, China

Rongjun Bian et al.

Summary: Massive amounts of food waste worldwide pose great risks to the environment, but in this study, a sustainable bioeconomy approach was proposed by using rice husk and food waste to produce biochar. The results showed that the emissions from the pyrolysis system were within the limits set by China and the EU, and the application of food waste biochar improved crop yield and reduced heavy metal uptake in soil.

Portable X-ray Fluorescence Analysis of Organic Amendments: A Review

Rafael Lopez-Nunez

Summary: Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has the potential for precise elemental analysis of organic amendments and compost. However, conflicting results have been obtained for certain elements. Despite this, the low cost and speed of the procedure suggest that pXRF could be widely used in the future, particularly in conjunction with other fast spectroscopic techniques.

Mantle source characteristics and magmatic processes during the 2021 La Palma eruption

James M. D. Day et al.

Summary: The 2021 eruption of La Palma was the first subaerial eruption in the Canary Islands in 50 years. The eruption exhibited temporal changes in mineralogy and bulk rock geochemistry, reflecting the evolution of volcanic activity. The study of lavas also provided insight into precursor seismicity and magma activity.

Biochar in climate change mitigation

Johannes Lehmann et al.

Summary: Climate change mitigation strategies based on biochar generation and its application to agricultural soils can effectively sequester carbon, with trade-offs between biogeochemical and economic considerations. Emission reductions and CO2 removal by biochar systems depend on the energy being replaced, with varying impacts when biochar is used instead of coal or renewable energy sources. Opportunities for increasing crop yields exist with biochar additions, but the trade-offs and relationships among emissions reductions, energy production, and fertilizer responses must be carefully considered for effective climate change mitigation.

Application of Biochar Produced from Crop Residues on Trace Elements Contaminated Soils: Effects on Soil Properties, Enzymatic Activities and Brassica rapa Growth

Paloma Campos et al.

Summary: The study found that heavy use of biochar can significantly increase the pH, water holding capacity, and total carbon content of the soil. Additionally, biochar application can reduce the activity of beta-glucosidase in the soil and decrease the concentration of extractable heavy metals. Moreover, different biochars can also impact the distribution of trace elements in the soil.
