Measuring sustainability performance of rice cultivation in Thailand using Sustainable Rice Platform indicators

Rattanawan Mungkung et al.

Summary: This study assessed the sustainability level of rice farming practices in Thailand based on data collected from 2000 farmers. The results showed that Khao Dawk Mali 105 performing in rainfed, organic production systems had the best performance. The formation of a farmer group and good performance in farm management, Integrated Pest Management, health and safety, and water use were identified as key success factors. The proposed performance indicators were considered appropriate for measuring progress towards sustainable rice cultivation for policy makers. Communicating the successful cases of SRP-certified rice farms and the benefits of SRP implementation to other rice farmers could lead to wider adoption. The SRP scores and performance indicators were useful in identifying priority interventions for achieving sustainability.

Groundwater chemistry, distribution and potential health risk appraisal of nitrate enriched groundwater: A case study from the semi-urban region of South India

Narsimha Adimalla et al.

Summary: Global groundwater is facing an increasing problem of elevated nitrate concentration, which directly impacts human health. Research in a specific region showed that a significant portion of groundwater samples exceeded safe nitrate levels according to Indian guidelines. Health risk assessment revealed that oral exposure to nitrate poses a higher risk than dermal contact, with a considerable percentage of groundwater samples in the study area posing non-carcinogenic health risks for children, females, and males.

The global burden of chronic and hidden hunger revisited: New panel data evidence spanning 1990? 2017

Bert Lenaerts et al.

Summary: The study found that hidden hunger is more prevalent than chronic hunger, and the supply of cereals and vegetables and fruits are crucial in reducing the burden of hunger. Gender equality only affects hidden hunger. Additionally, the spatial spillover effects of GDP on the burden of hunger are also important factors.

A meta-analysis of projected global food demand and population at risk of hunger for the period 2010-2050

Michiel van Dijk et al.

Summary: Based on a review of 57 global food security projection and quantitative scenario studies published in the past two decades, it is projected that the total global food demand will increase by 35% to 56% by 2050, while the population at risk of hunger is expected to change by -91% to +8%. Both ranges are significantly lower than previous projections.
