Effects of gallic acid and Zn, Cu, and Ni on antioxidant enzyme activities of Hyphantria cunea larvae infected with Bacillus thuringiensis

Elif F. Topkara et al.

Summary: This study identified the effects of copper, nickel, zinc, and the antioxidant gallic acid on the antioxidant enzyme activities of Hyphantria cunea larvae infected with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. Metal exposure increased all enzyme activities, and an antagonistic effect was observed when combining gallic acid with the metals for some enzyme activities.

Comparison of larval performance and oviposition preference ofSpodoptera frugiperdaamong three host plants: Potential risks to potato and tobacco crops

Jing-Fei Guo et al.

Summary: Fall armyworm performed best on maize, with shorter developmental time in the larval stage, longer longevity, and higher reproductive rate in adults. Females showed a preference for ovipositing on maize. However, larvae fed on potato and tobacco had significantly lower survival rates, and various life table parameters were negatively affected in those conditions.

Involvement of chemosensory proteins in host plant searching in the bird cherry-oat aphid

Xiong Peng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the role of chemosensory proteins (CSPs) in the host-location behavior of aphids, particularly in response to different Poaceae species. Results showed that CSPs, particularly CSP4, CSP5, and CSP6, play a key role in mediating aphid responses to host plant odors and volatile compounds. Various factors such as aphid morph, tissue, and starvation state also influence the expression patterns and effectiveness of CSPs in host-plant selection. These findings provide insights into the mechanism of host plant selection in herbivorous insects.

Major ascaroside pheromone component asc-C5 influences reproductive plasticity among isolates of the invasive species pinewood nematode

Meiping Zhao et al.

Summary: Pheromones play a role in regulating reproductive plasticity in pinewood nematodes, influencing fecundity in both invasive and native strains. The major pheromone component asc-C5 is identified as a key player in this process, providing new insights into the reproductive strategies of invasive species.

Potential range expansion and niche shift of the invasive Hyphantria cunea between native and invasive countries

Xinggang Tang et al.

Summary: The gypsy moth is an invasive species causing damage to agricultural and forestry ecosystems in China. Research shows that climate change will expand the suitable habitat range for the moth, but low latitude areas will be limited in the future. There is low niche overlap between gypsy moth populations in the USA and China, with significant differences in bioclimate variables associated with their presence.

Transcriptome analysis and response of three important detoxifying enzymes to Serratia marcescens Bizio (SM1) in Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Kai Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Serratia marcescens infection on the transcriptome of Hyphantria cunea, revealing the differential expression of key detoxification enzymes in response to SM1. Transcriptome sequencing identified the key metabolic pathways, signaling pathways, and genes affected by S. marcescens in H. cunea.

The high adaptability of Hyphantria cunea larvae to cinnamic acid involves in detoxification, antioxidation and gut microbiota response

Dun Jiang et al.

Summary: The research found that cinnamic acid treatment did not affect the growth and food utilization of H. cunea larvae, and did not cause significant changes in oxidative stress-related parameters and midgut histopathology. Cinnamic acid treatment significantly increased the content of non-enzymatic antioxidants, antioxidants enzymes, detoxification enzyme, and several gut microbiota at the genus level involved in larval midgut organic substance degradation.

Effects of water deficiency on preference and performance of an insect herbivore Ostrinia furnacalis

M. Y. Duan et al.

Summary: The study found that the Asian corn borer preferred laying eggs on well-watered maize, resulting in better offspring fitness on the preferred maize. Oviposition selection of the Asian corn borer correlated with height and leaf traits of maize, while offspring fitness related to water content and phytochemical traits of hosts.

Oviposition preference not necessarily predicts offspring performance in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on vegetable crops

Paola Sotelo-Cardona et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ovipositional preference of fall armyworm females on different host plants, finding a preference for maize and a reluctance for tomato. Despite a low oviposition preference for cabbage, soybean, and tomato, these crops seemed to provide a high benefit for offspring performance exceeding the benefits from a maize-based diet in some cases.
