Social innovation and community-focussed civic initiatives in the context of rural depopulation: For everybody by everybody? Project Ulrum 2034

Hiska Ubels et al.

Summary: This paper examines the evaluation of a civic initiative aimed at improving liveability by residents of a Dutch village experiencing rural depopulation and austerity reforms, using a civic perspective and social innovation theory. The majority of residents had a positive evaluation of the initiative, but a substantial group had little knowledge about it and low-income groups lacked interest in identifying and engaging with it. Voluntary engagement did not necessarily lead to positive evaluation, and tangible outputs were the primary factor explaining citizens' appreciation. Increased collaboration within the village and with the local government also played a role, but only when accompanied by realized tangible outputs.

Performance of large-scale irrigation projects in sub-Saharan Africa

Thomas P. Higginbottom et al.

Summary: The study reveals that only 16% of the proposed irrigated area is being delivered in 79 irrigation schemes across sub-Saharan Africa, with 25% delivering over 80% and 20% completely inactive. The findings are attributed to low economic viability, excessive optimism, and inadequate central bureaucratic systems in irrigation development.

Stakeholder collaboration and irrigation practices in Ghana: issues, challenges, and the way forward

Dorothy Julian Nalumu et al.

Summary: This study uses the Weija Irrigation Scheme as a case study to explore stakeholders' perceptions of collaborative practices in irrigation management. Despite the government's resolve for collaborative irrigation planning and management, there are still issues such as weak communication, lack of information sharing, minimal commitment to joint project planning, exclusion of key stakeholders from meetings, and limited capacity for joint action. The policy implications and suggestions for further research are presented in the study.
