Foliar-applied potassium triggers soil potassium uptake by improving growth and photosynthetic activity of wheat and maize

Muhammad Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Foliar fertilization is an important agricultural practice that can enhance soil potassium uptake by crop plants, as demonstrated in experiments with wheat and maize. By applying potassium to the leaves, the net potassium uptake through the roots increased by approximately 23% in wheat and 55% in maize. This resulted in improved phenotypic traits and enhanced photosynthetic activity in the treated seedlings. The findings suggest that foliar potassium fertilization has the potential to benefit cereal crops and should be further investigated to understand the underlying signaling pathways.

Physiological Essence of Magnesium in Plants and Its Widespread Deficiency in the Farming System of China

Muhammad Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Magnesium is an essential nutrient for plants, playing a critical role in various physiological and biochemical processes. However, magnesium deficiency has become a limiting factor for crop production due to the introduction of high-yielding fertilizer-responsive cultivars, intensive cropping without adequate magnesium replenishment, soil acidification, and magnesium leaching. This article highlights the importance of magnesium in plant responses, the geographical distribution of magnesium deficiency, and the need to optimize fertilization strategies to increase crop productivity and quality.

Foliar nutrition: Potential and challenges under multifaceted agriculture

Muhammad Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Foliar fertilization is a recognized method to improve crop productivity, but its consequences under multiple environmental stresses remain unclear. Recent studies have shown the potential of foliar fertilization in increasing crop yield and quality by 15-19% and 9-29%, respectively, under different environmental stresses.

The Effect of Farmyard Manure and Mineral Fertilizers on Sugar Beet Beetroot and Top Yield and Soil Chemical Parameters

Lukas Hlisnikovsky et al.

Summary: The study found that under different weather conditions, the application of FYM, NPK, and FYM + NPK resulted in higher yields compared to the control group, but had no significant impact on sugar content in sugar beet. The application of NPK led to a decrease in soil pH, while FYM + NPK application increased organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen content (Ntot), and phosphorus and potassium concentrations in the soil.

Interactive Effects of Gibberellic Acid and Nitrogen Fertilization on the Growth, Yield, and Quality of Sugar Beet

Ahmed A. A. Leilah et al.

Summary: Field trials conducted in Egypt showed that higher levels of nitrogen fertilizer and GA(3) concentration can significantly increase sugar beet yield and growth parameters, but also decrease quality parameters. Early application of GA(3) has a positive impact on sugar beet growth and yield.

Magnesium Limitation Leads to Transcriptional Down-Tuning of Auxin Synthesis, Transport, and Signaling in the Tomato Root

Muhammad Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Magnesium deficiency is becoming a limiting factor for crop production, affecting the total Mg2+ content in plants. The up-regulation of magnesium transporters in response to Mg deficiency was found to lead to a smaller root system in tomato seedlings. Additionally, a decrease in auxin concentrations and overall down-regulation of genes in the auxin signaling pathway were observed under Mg limitation.

Exogenous boron alleviates growth inhibition by NaCl stress by reducing Cl- uptake in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris)

Xinxiu Dong et al.

Summary: This study showed that application of 750μM boron mitigated the growth inhibition of sugar beet seedlings caused by 300mM NaCl and reduced the Cl- content in the plants. Boron upregulated the expression of CLC-b, CLC-c, CLC-f genes and downregulated the expression of NIP5, NIP6, and AKT1 under NaCl stress. These results suggest that exogenous boron regulates Cl- transport in sugar beet seedlings under NaCl stress.

Responses of Photosynthetic Performance of Sugar Beet Varieties to Foliar Boron Spraying

Zhenzhen Wu et al.

Summary: The experiment aimed to clarify the effect of boron application on different boron-sensitive beet varieties. The results showed that an appropriate amount of boron could significantly increase photosynthetic rate, SPAD value, and PIABS in leaves. However, excessive boron application would lead to toxicity and inhibited growth behavior of beets.
