Muscle transcriptome analysis reveal candidate genes and pathways related to fat and lipid metabolism in Yunling cattle

Fengwei Zhang et al.

Summary: By comparing Yunling cattle and Diqing cattle, we identified candidate genes associated with meat quality and revealed the importance of lipid and fat metabolism pathways in the differences. Additionally, we found a crucial variation in a gene related to beef marbling in Yunling cattle, which might play a central role in the 'snow beef' effect.

TLE4 regulates muscle stem cell quiescence and skeletal muscle differentiation

Megha Agarwal et al.

Summary: This study uncovers a novel mechanism to maintain satellite cell quiescence and regulate muscle differentiation mediated by the corepressor TLE4, which represses Pax7-mediated Myf5 transcriptional activation to maintain the dormant state of satellite cells and plays an important role in muscle regeneration.

Genetic diversity and selection signatures of four indigenous pig breeds from eastern China

Zitao Chen et al.

Summary: Chinese indigenous pig breeds have been valuable genetic resources after undergoing selection for thousands of years. This study investigated the population structure and genetic diversity of four indigenous breeds and revealed differences between them and intensively reared commercial pig breeds. Additionally, the study identified genes associated with selection signatures and provided insights into future pig breeding.

IRX5 promotes adipogenesis of hMSCs by repressing glycolysis

Bulin Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that IRX5 plays a crucial role in promoting adipogenesis of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) by transcriptionally regulating PGC-1 alpha and inhibiting glycolysis. This study reveals a potential target to control hMSCs fate decision and bone homeostasis.

Population genetic structure analysis and identification of backfat thickness loci of Chinese synthetic Yunan pigs

Ruimin Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic structure, selection signals, and genome-wide association of Yunan pigs were analyzed. A total of 34 significant loci associated with backfat traits were detected, among which a 1.40 Mb region on SSC4 was identified as a strong region underlying backfat. The results provide valuable information for the conservation and breeding improvement of backfat thickness in Yunan pigs.

Qiaoling Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the genomic diversity and selective signals of the Hainan Black goat with other breeds, revealing distinct features in the genetic makeup of the Hainan Black goat. The study identified candidate genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with specific traits of the Hainan Black goat. The results provide valuable insights into the genetic basis of these traits and highlight the importance of protecting breed resources.

Genetic architecture and selection of Anhui autochthonous pig population revealed by whole genome resequencing

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure of pig populations in Anhui Province through genome resequencing. Two distinct types of pigs were identified based on ancestral descent, and potential selective sweep regions associated with domestication characteristics were also identified. These findings provide valuable insights for future genetic studies and genome-assisted breeding of pigs and other domesticated animals.

Genetic diversity and population structure of Tongcheng pigs in China using whole-genome SNP chip

Jiao Yuan et al.

Summary: The present study assessed the genetic diversity and population structure of Tongcheng (TC) pigs using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. The results showed that TC pigs possess high genetic diversity. However, their genetic resources are under threat due to the introduction of other pig breeds and African swine fever disease. Further optimization of the conservation program is needed to ensure adequate genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding depression.

Whole-genome SNP markers reveal conservation status, signatures of selection, and introgression in Chinese Laiwu pigs

Xiaopeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the current population of Laiwu pigs has more genetic diversity than 18 years ago, possibly due to gene flow from European commercial breeds. Significant introgression of European haplotypes into Laiwu pigs is evident, with an average of 26.66% of genetic components originating from Europe. A family-based conservation strategy was proposed to reduce inbreeding depression in Laiwu pigs, and a list of candidate genes related to fat deposition, reproduction, and growth in Laiwu pigs was identified. Strong introgression from European pigs at the GPC6 locus was detected, likely contributing to improved growth performance in Laiwu pigs.

Heather M. Ren et al.

Summary: Elevated interleukin (IL)-21, primarily produced by CD4 T cells, plays a role in promoting effector functions and memory differentiation of CD8 T cells in chronic infections and cancer. Its significance in autoimmune diseases, where the CD4 T cell-derived IL-21:IL21R signaling in CD8 T cells is not fully understood, is still being evaluated.
