Responsible companion animal guardianship is associated with canine visceral leishmaniasis: an analytical cross-sectional survey in an urban area of southeastern Brazil

Paulo Henrique Araujo Soares et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in a city in southeastern Brazil and found that variables related to better dog care were associated with lower chances of infection. Specifically, dogs sheltered outside the house and with free access to the streets, as well as guardians without formal education or with a university degree, had a significantly higher risk of CVL. Additionally, dogs acquired as puppies had half the chance of developing the disease compared to adult dogs. Geographically weighted logistic regression showed that the strengths of predictor/CVL associations varied depending on the studied geographical space, but the associations were always in the same directions.

Summary: Free-ranging dogs in Vicosa, Brazil, exhibit different behaviors depending on their habitat. Urban free-ranging dogs rely on scavenging for food, while rural free-ranging dogs engage in property protection and vigilance. The study found that rural free-ranging dogs displayed more vigilance and aggressive behavior compared to urban free-ranging dogs, who showed more locomotor activity. The availability of resources influenced the behavior of urban free-ranging dogs, while rural free-ranging dogs had a more structured feeding schedule.
