Presence and Transfer of Antimicrobial Resistance Determinants inEscherichia coliin Pigs, Pork, and Humans in Thailand and Lao PDR Border Provinces

Chanika Pungpian et al.

Summary: The study revealed common antimicrobial resistance in pig-origin Escherichia coli and humans in border provinces of Thailand and Lao PDR, with a high prevalence of multidrug resistance. Resistance genes like aadA1 and ESBL genes like bla(CTX-M55) were frequently found. Collaboration in research and policy between sectors is essential to address the issue of AMR effectively.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Isolated from Humans and Domestic Animals

Yanyu Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains in China, revealing diverse resistance patterns and the presence of various resistance genes among strains from different sources. Whole genome analysis showed genetic diversity among STEC strains from different sources, with some strains tending to cluster closely within the phylogenetic tree. These findings provide valuable information for monitoring and guiding the use of antimicrobial drugs in the management of multidrug resistant STEC strains among animals and humans.

Carriage of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in Healthy People: Recognition of Several Risk Groups

Christel Neut

Summary: The increase in multidrug-resistant bacteria in hospitalized people and the community poses a significant risk for individuals with comorbidities or in extreme age groups. Risk factors for acquiring multidrug-resistant bacteria include residence or travel in high-risk countries, occupational risks, and comorbidities. Preventive measures, including reinforcing hygienic practices in both hospitals and communities, will be crucial in combating the spread of these bacteria.

Subtyping Salmonella isolated from pet dogs with multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs)

Cheng Yang et al.

Summary: Salmonella as a zoonotic pathogen, especially in transmission between household pets and humans, has attracted worldwide attention. A study conducted in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, investigated the distribution of dog Salmonella from pet hospitals and breeding base. The results showed that S. Kentucky was the most prevalent serotype, and CRISPR genes have better recognition ability for the same serotype.

Clinically Relevant Escherichia coli Isolates from Process Waters and Wastewater of Poultry and Pig Slaughterhouses in Germany

Mykhailo Savin et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli with high multidrug resistance rates and extraintestinal pathogenic potential were found in poultry and pig slaughterhouses in Germany. The isolates were reservoirs for numerous antimicrobial resistance determinants and contained high-risk clones associated with human infections worldwide. The presence of uropathogenic E. coli in the effluent of a poultry slaughterhouse's wastewater treatment plant suggests potential dissemination into surface waters.

The European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food in 2018/2019

Summary: Data on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and food are collected annually by EU Member States, jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC, and reported in a yearly EU Summary Report. The monitoring in 2018 focused on poultry and their derived products, while the monitoring in 2019 specifically targeted pigs, calves, and their derived products.
