Environmental Enrichment for Pig welfare during Transport

Carla Crone et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effects of environmental enrichment during transportation for pigs. The results showed that providing pigs with appropriate environmental enrichment can reduce aggressive behaviors, lower skin temperature, and make pigs more comfortable during transportation.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between active social behaviors and lying in proximity in indoor-housed pigs. The results showed that these two factors captured different and uncorrelated information when analyzed at the group level.

Gross and histopathological evaluation of umbilical outpouchings in pigs

Trine Hovmand-Hansen et al.

Summary: Clinical presentations of umbilical outpouchings in pigs vary in pathological manifestations, with umbilical hernia being the most common cause. The distribution of diagnoses differs among different age groups. The presence of wounds on the umbilical outpouchings is associated with the age and pathological manifestations of the pigs.

Impact of two commercial weaning and transport strategies on piglet behaviour, body weight change, lesions and lameness following transport

Hannah R. Golightly et al.

Summary: Commercial swine systems in Canada have different weaning and transport practices, with piglets undergoing longer transport after weaning showing higher feeding and drinking behavior. The study suggests that weaning timeline and transport duration can impact piglet welfare indicators, calling for further investigation on the relationship between weaning and transport departure times.

Animal welfare during transport: comparison of mortality during transport from farm to slaughter of different animal species and categories in the Czech Republic

Summary: Animals are subjected to various stressors during transport, leading to increased mortality rates, especially in poultry transport. It is necessary to re-evaluate transport conditions and assess animal fitness before transport.

Physiological response of weaned piglets to two transport durations observed in a Canadian commercial setting

Hannah R. Golightly et al.

Summary: Observational studies on the impact of transport duration on weaned piglet welfare are limited. Differences in physiological responses between piglets and market hogs highlight the need for age-specific recommendations. Both short and long transport durations can lead to detectable physiological changes in piglets, indicating the importance of further investigating their impact on piglet welfare.

Behavior, blood stress indicators, skin lesions, and meat quality in pigs transported to slaughter at different loading densities

Valentina Montoya Urrea et al.

Summary: The results of the study suggest that using lower loading densities (<= 235 kg/m(2)) during transportation allows pigs to have sufficient space to rest, travel more comfortably, and arrive less fatigued at the slaughter plant.

Identification of trailer heat zones and associated heat stress in weaner pigs transported by road in tropical climates

Nitalo A. F. Machado et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dynamics of heat zones and their relationship with heat stress of weaner pigs during road transport in a tropical climate. The results showed that heat zones of different magnitudes occurred along the load, harmonized by ventilation dynamics. Weaners in the lower deck compartments were more susceptible to heat stress, while those in the upper deck compartments were more susceptible to physical stress and muscle exhaustion.

The Welfare of Cattle, Sheep, Goats and Pigs from the Perspective of Traumatic Injuries Detected at Slaughterhouse Postmortem Inspection

Lenka Valkova et al.

Summary: The study evaluated traumatic injuries in cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs in the Czech Republic. Traumatic lesions were found at a low frequency, with cows being the most affected category and small ruminants and bulls having lower rates of traumatic findings. This suggests that factors such as animal housing and rearing environment may impact the occurrence of traumatic injuries.
