Comparison of post-operative inflammatory response in horses undergoing elective castration treated preoperatively with ceftiofur crystalline free acid or procaine penicillin G

T. Bergstrom et al.

Summary: The study found that using long-acting ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA) as a preoperative antibiotic in equine castrations did not significantly reduce post-operative inflammatory markers compared to procaine penicillin G (PPG). There was no clinically significant difference in inflammatory markers between the two treatment groups, and both had a similar rate of short-term complications. The data suggests that the choice between CCFA and PPG for preoperative antibiotic use in routine castrations may not have a significant impact on outcomes.

Measurement properties of grimace scales for pain assessment in nonhuman mammals: a systematic review

Marina C. Evangelista et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to assess the measurement properties of grimace scales for pain assessment in animals. The review found significant variability in the development and measurement properties of these scales across different species. The Mouse, Rat, Horse, and Feline Grimace Scales showed strong evidence, while the Rabbit, Lamb, Piglet, and Ferret Grimace Scales, as well as the Sheep Pain Facial Expression Scale, had moderate evidence. The Sheep Grimace Scale, EQUUS-FAP, and EQUUS-Donkey-FAP had low evidence for measurement properties. The most reported measurement property was construct validity, while reliability and other forms of validity were understudied.

Interobserver and intraobserver reliability for 2 grading systems for of gastric ulcer syndrome in horses

Jessica C. Wise et al.

Summary: The study found that observer experience has an impact on the reliability of grading systems for equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS). The EGUC system showed good reliability regardless of observer experience, while the VAS required experienced observers to enhance reliability.

Development and preliminary validation of a pain scale for ophthalmic pain in horses: The Equine Ophthalmic Pain Scale (EOPS)

F. Ortolani et al.

Summary: A composite pain scale called EOPS was developed and validated to assess ocular pain in horses. The scale showed good internal consistency, reliability, and responsiveness, with high accuracy in distinguishing healthy and pathological animals. Areas for improvement include certain behavioral and physiological parameters to enhance the scale's reliability.

Equine inflammatory response to abdominal surgery in the absence of gastrointestinal disease

Charles Bowlby et al.

Summary: The study found that horses undergoing ventral midline celiotomy saw a significant increase in serum amyloid A (SAA) levels at 12, 24, and 48 hours postoperatively, with values returning to normal levels by 168 hours for most horses. Other parameters such as fibrinogen also increased post-surgery but did not normalize within the measured time points. Horses with different body condition scores did not show significant differences in serum SAA levels.
