Dipylidium caninum in the twenty-first century: epidemiological studies and reported cases in companion animals and humans

Julieta Rousseau et al.

Summary: This review examines the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention measures of dipylidiosis caused by the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. While the disease mainly affects domestic and wild carnivores, it is also considered a zoonotic disease, with most human cases reported in children. The diagnosis of dipylidiosis remains challenging, and current diagnostic methods are often ineffective. Prevention measures include controlling ectoparasites in animals and the environment and regular deworming of animals. However, indiscriminate use of anti-cestode compounds may lead to increased resistance. Education and control measures for both children and animal owners are essential due to the worldwide distribution of this parasite.

Reduction of free-roaming cat population requires high-intensity neutering in spatial contiguity to mitigate compensatory effects

Idit Gunther et al.

Summary: This article examines the effectiveness of trap-neuter-return/release (TNR) in controlling the population of domestic cats and suggests a management approach that emphasizes high intensity, continuity, and geographic contiguity. The study finds that TNR has some effectiveness in reducing the cat population, but the rebound increase in reproduction and longevity of cats limits the population reduction. To enhance management effectiveness and mitigate compensatory effects, the article recommends integrating TNR with complementary methods.

The European Union One Health 2021 Zoonoses Report

Summary: This report presents the results of zoonoses monitoring and surveillance activities conducted in 2021 in 27 MSs, the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), and nine non-MSs. It provides key statistics on zoonoses and zoonotic agents in humans, animals, food, and feed, with a historical interpretation. The most reported zoonoses in humans in 2021 were campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis.

Zoonotic giardiasis: an update

Weilong Cai et al.

Summary: Recent data suggests that humans are primarily infected with Giardia duodenalis assemblages A and B, while host-adapted assemblages are common in animals, indicating that zoonotic giardiasis may be less common and mostly related to contact with a small number of animal species. Future studies should focus on advanced genetic characterization of isolates from humans and animals living in the same household or community to better understand zoonotic transmission of G. duodenalis in different environmental and socioeconomic settings.

Short Term Safety, Immunogenicity, and Reproductive Effects of Combined Vaccination With Anti-GnRH (Gonacon) and Rabies Vaccines in Female Feral Cats

Shiri Novak et al.

Summary: The overpopulation of free-roaming cats presents various challenges, and there is a need for non-surgical immunocontraception methods. This study found that combined vaccination with anti-GnRH and rabies vaccines in feral cats is safe and effective in the short term, with further long-term studies recommended.
