Palm kernel cake in high-concentrate diets improves animal performance without affecting the meat quality of goat kids

T. C. G. C. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of high-concentrate diets with palm kernel cake (PKC) on carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot goat kids. Results showed that the diet containing 12% PKC resulted in the highest total weight gain and marbling in the meat.

Reassessing the role of cattle and pasture in Brazil's deforestation: A response to Fire, deforestation, and livestock: When the smoke clears

Filipe Franca et al.

Summary: The study assessed the links between deforestation, livestock production, and exports in Brazil, finding a decoupling between beef production and deforestation. The authors argue that previous research underestimated the strong links between Brazilian livestock production and deforestation, and failed to recognize the marked differences in development trajectories of Brazilian biomes. Scientists must be open and meticulous with their data sources and analyses in order to advance debates and aid decision-making regarding land-use changes in the Amazon region.

Palm Kernel Cake in Diets for Lactating Goats: Qualitative Aspects of Milk and Cheese

Fernanda G. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Feedlotting lactating goats is a strategy to improve productivity and quality, with the use of palm kernel cake (PKC) at up to 80 g kg(-1) recommended for cheese production. Dietary inclusion of PKC impacted sensory parameters and fatty acid composition of cheese.

Fire, deforestation, and livestock: When the smoke clears

Rafael De Oliveira Silva et al.

Summary: The scrutiny of the reasons for the Amazon fires in 2019 reveals that the perceived link between deforestation and extensive land use for beef production is not as clear as commonly supposed. Sparing land through sustainable intensification of livestock pastures may act as a significant buffer between meat demand, livestock production, and consequent land use change and deforestation. Well-intentioned beef boycotts could weaken the incentive for pasture restoration, potentially leading to extensive land use and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
