Seroprevalence and Risk Factors for Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in Cattle in Portugal

Helga Waap et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the seroprevalence and risk factors for Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in naturally exposed cattle in Portugal. The results showed a low but widespread seroprevalence of T. gondii, while N. caninum had a seroprevalence similar to other Mediterranean countries. Climate factors and management practices were significant predictors of infection for both parasites. The study highlights the importance of considering neosporosis in the differential diagnosis of cattle reproductive disorders and informing source attribution models for human toxoplasmosis.

Dynamics of Neospora caninum-Associated Abortions in a Dairy Sheep Flock and Results of a Test-and-Cull Control Programme

Roberto Sanchez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Neospora caninum parasite can cause abortions in sheep, and this study found that seropositive sheep are more likely to abort with endogenous transplacental transmission as the main route. A control program based on selective culling of seropositive sheep and replacement with seronegative animals was effective in reducing the abortion rate.

The global seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in bovines: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Seyyed Ali Shariatzadeh et al.

Summary: The first systematic review and meta-analysis on the global Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in bovines revealed an average prevalence of 17.91% worldwide, with cattle at 16.94%, buffalo at 22.26%, yak at 23%, and bison at 8.1%. Continued monitoring of T. gondii seroprevalence in bovines is essential, along with studying the prevalence of T. gondii in bovine products as potential sources of transmission to humans.
