Evaluation of Environmental Sampling for Detection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in the Pre-Weaned Calf Area and Calving Area of Infected Dairy Farms Enrolled in a Voluntary Johne's Disease Control Programme

Niamh L. Field et al.

Summary: Transmission of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) from infected adult cattle to susceptible calves occurs mainly through contamination of the calf environment. Control programmes for Johne's disease utilise a risk assessment and management plan (RAMP) to evaluate the risk of transmission, however, this assessment is limited by its subjective nature. This study evaluated a novel environmental sampling protocol to measure MAP contamination of the calf environment on infected farms.

Detection of Low MAP Shedder Prevalence in Large Free-Stall Dairy Herds by Repeated Testing of Environmental Samples and Pooled Milk Samples

Annika Wichert et al.

Summary: The study indicates that multiple repeated samplings are necessary to effectively monitor the presence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in large dairy herds with low prevalence. A combination of different sampling methods is crucial for detecting the pathogen in herds with extremely low prevalence.

Analysis of Colostrum and Udder Skin Swabs from a Dairy Goat Herd in Germany regarding the Occurrence of Mycobacterium avium Subsp. paratuberculosis

Chris Pickrodt et al.

Summary: This study assessed the importance of colostrum and udder skin as transmission routes for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in a dairy goat herd. The results showed no detection of MAP in colostrum and a low number of positive samples for MAP DNA in udder skin, but no viable bacteria were cultured. Therefore, current recommendations regarding colostrum and youngstock management should be re-evaluated, but still applied in goat herds within a paratuberculosis control program.

Predicting sensitivity of repeated environmental sampling for Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in dairy herds using a Bayesian latent class model

V Zoche-Golob et al.

Summary: This study compared the cumulative sensitivity of annual environmental sampling and calculated the number of sampling events needed to achieve a cumulative sensitivity of at least 0.9 with different sample numbers. The results showed that a sampling scheme with four samples per event had a higher cumulative sensitivity, but achieving a sensitivity of at least 0.9 required different numbers of sampling events.
