Meta-analysis of rumination behavior and its relationship with milk and milk fat production, rumen pH, and total-tract digestibility in lactating dairy cows

Jocely G. Souza et al.

Summary: Rumination time in dairy cows is closely related to milk fat yield and influenced by factors such as milk yield, dry matter intake, and rumen pH. A meta-regression analysis of 130 journal articles found that rumination time increased quadratically with milk fat yield and milk fat percentage, as well as being influenced by dietary factors like NDF and total-tract digestibility. Total-tract digestibility was found to explain 41% of the variation in rumination time when included in the model.

Sensor based time budgets in commercial Dutch dairy herds vary over lactation cycles and within 24 hours

P. R. Hut et al.

Summary: This study examined the time budgets of cows from 8 commercial dairy farms in the Netherlands using sensors. The results showed that parity, farm, and calving season had significant effects on the cows' behavior. Differences were observed in the behavior patterns between primiparous cows and cows with higher parities, as well as between cows on conventional milking system (CMS) farms and cows on automatic milking system (AMS) farms. The findings suggest that there is a specific behavioral pattern for cows during the transition period and lactation.

Different reticuloruminal pH metrics of high-yielding dairy cattle during the transition period in relation to metabolic health, activity, and feed intake

S. Heirbaut et al.

Summary: This study examines the associations between reticulorumen pH metrics and metabolic health parameters, feed intake, and activity. The results indicate that pH patterns are associated with metabolic health and feed intake, while time pH < 6 is not. Furthermore, pH deviations are negatively correlated with feed intake and rumination behavior.

Effects of adding an automated monitoring device to the health screening of postpartum Holstein cows on survival and productive and reproductive performances

Manuel A. Silva et al.

Summary: The study found that adding AMD-generated health alerts to an existing health screening program did not improve survival, milk yield, or reproductive success of postpartum cows. However, cows diagnosed with clinical disease but without AMD alerts had better outcomes in terms of survival, milk yield, and pregnancy risk than those with AMD alerts.

A Systematic Review on Commercially Available and Validated Sensor Technologies for Welfare Assessment of Dairy Cattle

Anna H. Stygar et al.

Summary: This study provided a systematic overview of externally validated and commercially available precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies for sensor-based welfare assessment in dairy cattle. Only a small percentage of sensors on the market have been externally validated. The validated technologies mainly focus on assessing animal activity, feeding and drinking behavior, physical condition, and health, with limited potential for assessing appropriate behavior of dairy cows.
