Differential Transmission of Old and New World Begomoviruses by Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) and Mediterranean (MED) Cryptic Species of Bemisia tabaci

Saurabh Gautam et al.

Summary: This study compared the transmission efficiency of one Old-World and two New-World begomoviruses prevalent in the southeastern United States, tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV), and sida golden mosaic virus (SiGMV), between B. tabaci MEAM1 and B. tabaci MED. Results demonstrate that both B. tabaci MEAM1 and B. tabaci MED are efficient vectors of Old-World TYLCV. However, for the New-World begomoviruses, CuLCrV and SiGMV, B. tabaci MEAM1 seems to be a better vector.

Tomato leaf curl Oman virus and associated Betasatellite causing leaf curl disease in tomato in Pakistan

Nasim Ahmed et al.

Summary: The global spread of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus poses a threat to tomato production in tropical and sub-tropical regions, with a new species Tomato leaf curl Oman virus identified in Oman. In Pakistan, Tomato leaf curl disease symptoms were observed in tomato plants, with the presence of ToLCOMV-PK and associated ToLCB causing enhanced symptoms and virus accumulation in Nicotiana benthamiana plants.

Phylogeographic and SNPs Analyses of Bemisia tabaci B Mitotype Populations Reveal Only Two of Eight Haplotypes Are Invasive

Jorge R. Paredes-Montero et al.

Summary: A study on the genetic architecture of the whitefly B. tabaci B mitoype revealed eight haplotypes, indicating a more complex structure than previously recognized. The distribution patterns of these eight B haplotypes were closely linked to specific eco-geographic regions, suggesting geographic isolation as a driving factor in their diversification. Out of the eight haplotypes, only two (NAFME 6 and 8) have established in geographical locations outside of their zone of endemism, challenging the notion that collectively, the B variant is invasive.

Interaction of watermelon chlorotic stunt virus with satellites

Muhammad Shafiq et al.

Summary: Pumpkin plants infected with watermelon chlorotic stunt virus were discovered in Barka Governate, Oman, indicating a serious threat to cucurbit crops. The potential interaction of the virus with satellites and its impact on agriculture in Oman and beyond were assessed, with no significant symptoms found when betasatellites or alphasatellites were co-inoculated with WmCSV.
