The Role of Cytochrome P450s in Insect Toxicology and Resistance

Ralf Nauen et al.

Summary: Insect cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play important physiological roles and are particularly involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics. Recent advances in insect genomics and functional approaches have shed light on the evolution of insect P450s, their regulation mechanisms, and the genetic alterations leading to insecticide resistance. Additionally, studies on the sensitivity of beneficial insects to insecticides have provided valuable knowledge for managing P450-mediated resistance and safeguarding their health.

Natural occurrence of Beauveria bassiana on adults of the invasive mango seed weevil Sternochetus mangiferae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Brazil

Alessandra Carvalho Silva et al.

Summary: The mango seed weevil Sternochetus mangiferae was detected in Brazil in 2014, posing a potential threat to mango production and fruit exports. A naturally occurring fungal disease, identified as Beauveria bassiana, was found in populations of this invasive pest in Brazil, providing a possible alternative control strategy. The study suggests that the use of selected B. bassiana strains as biopesticides could be a safer and more effective way to reduce the populations of this invasive pest.

The role of UDP-glycosyltransferases in xenobioticresistance

Diana Dimunova et al.

Summary: Uridine diphosphate sugar-utilizing glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are a superfamily of enzymes that transfer glycosyl residues from activated nucleotide sugars to acceptor molecules. UGTs effectively protect organisms from potentially harmful xenobiotics and play an important role in defense against xenobiotics in not only humans but also other organisms such as parasites, insects, and plants. However, more research is needed to understand the mechanisms of UGT regulation.

Yanhua Long et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the differences in immune gene expression levels in fat bodies and hemocytes of Ectropis obliqua infected by Beauveria bassiana using transcriptome sequencing. The results showed that a large number of immune-related genes were upregulated in hemocytes and fat bodies after infection. This study provides important gene sequence information for understanding the defense mechanisms of Ectropis obliqua against Beauveria bassiana.

The Intestinal Immune Defense System in Insects

Tian Zeng et al.

Summary: Insects have developed unique intestinal defenses against microorganism invasion, including physical barriers like the peritrophic matrix and mucus layer, as well as immune responses such as antimicrobial peptides and reactive oxygen species. The janus kinase/STAT signaling pathway and melanization play important roles in insect intestinal immunity. The coordination of the intestinal immune defense system and intestinal tissue renewal is essential in effectively defending against pathogens.

Comparative analysis of the immune system and expression profiling of Lymantria dispar infected by Beauveria bassiana

Jianyang Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the genetic characteristics and tissue expression patterns of antifungal immunity in Lymantria dispar, as well as the host defense against entomopathogenic infection. Results show that immune genes in L. dispar have a low response 24 hours after infection, with Toll pathway genes significantly upregulated at 48 hours. Furthermore, the oxidative stress system plays a positive role in clearing the pathogenic fungus.

Immune Responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus to a New Strain of Beauveria bassiana

Mohsen Mohamed Elsharkawy et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the new strain of Beauveria bassiana has pathogenicity to the larvae of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, with its effectiveness increasing as the spore concentration rises. The study also found that the infected larvae experienced significant changes in their defensive and detoxifying enzyme activities. The lethal effect of B. bassiana resulted in elevated expressions of specific genes.

Target antifungal peptides of immune signalling pathways in silkworm, Bombyx mori, against Beauveria bassiana

T. Geng et al.

Summary: Insects use antifungal innate immunity as a defense mechanism against entomogenous fungi, with the Toll, Jak/STAT, and IMD signaling pathways being activated by the fungus Beauveria bassiana in silkworms. Inhibition of these pathways results in reduced antifungal activity in silkworm hemolymph. The study identified specific antifungal peptides regulated by each pathway, showing that antimicrobial peptide genes in B. mori have evolved through expansion and selection of existing genes to adapt to fungal challenges. This insight aids in understanding insect immune regulation mechanisms.
