Bacterial Profile and Fatty Acid Composition of Anatolian Bee Bread Samples by Metataxonomic and Metabolomic Approach

Ozge Kahraman-Ilikkan

Summary: This study explored the bacteria and postbiotic potential of Anatolian bee bread samples from different regions of Turkey and their suitability for human consumption. Lactobacillaceae, Oscillospiraceae, Bacteroidaceae, Prevotellaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were the most common families found in the samples. Beneficial bacteria like Prevotalla copri, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and Akkermansia muciniphila were present, but undesired bacteria including Phocaeicola vulgatus, Phocaeicola dorei, and Clostridium perfringens were also detected. The samples contained butyric acid as a postbiotic component, along with polyunsaturated fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid and eicosadienoic acid. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid were the most abundant fatty acids. One of the samples exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

Subspecies-level genome comparison of Lactobacillus delbrueckii

Min-gyung Baek et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution of the six subspecies of L. delbrueckii using comparative genomics. It found that the defining feature of the species was the gene number increment driven by mobile elements and gene fragmentation, but the repertoire of subspecies-specific gene gains and losses differed among the six subspecies. Horizontal gene transfer analyses indicated frequent gene transfers between different subspecies at the time of divergence, but recent gene exchange was confined to a subspecies, implying independent evolution of the six subspecies. The results explained the differences in habitat and nutritional requirements among the subspecies of L. delbrueckii.

Genomic features underlying the evolutionary transitions of Apibacter to honey bee gut symbionts

Wenjun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared the genomes of bee gut bacteria Apibacter with their relatives, revealing a reduction in the Apibacter genome but retention of genes beneficial to the host. Unique genes involved in nitrate respiration were found in microaerobic Apibacter species, suggesting a key role in colonizing bee gut epithelium.

The antimicrobial properties and biogenic amine production of lactic acid bacteria isolated from various fermented food products

Hatice Yazgan et al.

Summary: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from fermented food products, pre-identified with API 50 CHL and confirmed by PCR. The cell-free supernatants (CFS) and neutralized cell-free supernatants (NCFS) showed strong antimicrobial effects against important foodborne pathogens. Notably, L. plantarum and L. raffinolactis demonstrated high antibacterial activities, making them potential bio-protective agents in the food industry.

Summary: The RefSeq project at NCBI contains a vast number of bacterial and archaeal genomes and proteins, with a focus on reducing spurious annotation through the use of expanded protein family models. The Protein Family Models Entrez database provides users with access to the PFMs, supporting multi-genome analyses and connections to the literature. The reference and representative genome set of prokaryotic genomes within RefSeq is regularly recalculated and available for download and BLAST searches.
