Convergent consequences of parthenogenesis on stick insect genomes

Kamil S. Jaron et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genome evolution of parthenogenetic species in the stick insect genus Timema and found that parthenogenesis leads to a significant reduction in heterozygosity and often results in genetically uniform populations. Additionally, the study revealed that parthenogenetic species experience less effective positive selection, indicating that sex is prevalent in natural populations due to its facilitation of rapid adaptation. The study also observed no increased accumulation of transposable elements in parthenogenetic species, likely due to the low TE activity in the genus. Overall, these findings provide empirical support for the negative consequences of parthenogenesis as predicted by theory.

Phenology and Potential Fecundity of Neoleucopis kartliana in Greece

Nikoleta Eleftheriadou et al.

Summary: The silver fly Neoleucopis kartliana Tanasijtshuk is a major predator of the giant pine scale (GPS) in Greece and Turkey, and has been found to be effective in controlling GPS populations. As GPS has recently been detected in Australia and causes damage to pine trees, it is important to study the potential use of the silver fly as a biological control agent. Our research on the silver fly's life history and feeding preferences reveals that it has three generations per year and feeds on all life stages of GPS. Additionally, the fly readily accepts artificial food sources and its egg production increases with age.

The Effect of Cold Periods on the Biological Cycle of Marchalina hellenica

Spiros D. Dafnis et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the life cycle of Marchalina hellenica and the impact of critical factors on honeydew honey production. The research highlights the significance of cold winter days in the secretion of spring honeydew. The findings provide valuable insights for beekeepers in planning the timely exploitation of pine tree honeydew secretions.

Geographical parthenogenesis in the brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria (Scytosiphonaceae): Sexuals in warm waters and parthenogens in cold waters

Masakazu Hoshino et al.

Summary: Geographical parthenogenesis is an interesting topic in evolutionary biology, and a novel pattern of geographical parthenogenesis in the isogamous brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria has been reported in Japan. The study found distinct distribution of sexual and parthenogenetic populations along different ocean currents, and suggested that parthenogens may have evolved at least twice independently in this species.
